I did everything it says and formated it and that work fine, but when I went to lock it I typed 3, it said it was loading but then it just went to a black screen and its been there for 30 mins. I checked and the hardrive is lockable

I just made a 400GB Samsung hard drive this week, model number HD400LD. Absolutley amazing, so much space!!!. I grabbed it for less than £80 delivered from savastore.com and very happy. Its max temp after a couple hours use is approx 33 - 37C. Fan only on 30% and have not made any hardware modifications. Transfer speeds are high as well. Remember that with any partition bigger than 256gb (or 255gb) will need a 32k clusters format or your games will play terrible.

I have made about 5 hard drives with xboxhdm, manufacturers Maxtor to Seagate, and the Samsung HD400LD is the most stable I have used. Its even had some games work on it that did not with the previous drives. Used partioner program to make one big F partition with about 370gb+ on it, nothing in G partition.

If anyone needs any software/tools/dashboards etc. then please send me a message.

A little tip is to use the DOS tools for locking as well. They have never let let me down so far, touch wood.

Hi, where is everyone getting xboxhdm 1.9 from? I can't remember where I got mine but there is NO linux folder and there is no eeprom file floating around in the zip file. I have my xbox's C and D folders on my PC ready to go. I also have the eeprom off my xbox and the hdd key text file on my PC and ready to go. Where do I get xboxhdm 1.9 that pertains to this tutorial? Thanks.

All the files referenced in this thread as well as many other tuts are found from xbins. Search google for "xbins login" w/o the quotes and follow the directions to get the files.

Hi guys. I'm in a bit of a quagmire. I used this method roughly 6 months ago to upgrade to a 120gb Seagate drive. Everything went smooth as planned. Just the other day I turned on my Xbox and got the "Error Code 07 - Service Needed" screen. I pulled my 120gb drive out and imaged it again using XboxHDM, and tried once more to no avail.

I have 3 of these drives, and tried another one, using all the same methods and still get the 07 Error Screen. However, I popped in the original Xbox WD 10gb drive and the system boots into UnleashX with no problem.

I can hear/feel the WD drive power on, however, I cannot with the Seagate drives. I've run diagnostics tests on both Seagate drives and they pass with no issue. Has anyone else run into a problem like this? I've seen that "07" could be related to the power supply, but why would the stock drive power up and not any of the others?

Error code 7 is - kernel - HDD timeout. Perhaps the reason it won't work is that higher capacity drives require more power than the stock drive needs.... just a thought

While long, this thread actually answers many questions. I suggest you read it start to finish. You will learn much from it! My personal favorite about the usage of this software is the ability for me to make a new drive of any size for my xbox using the cd I created. Should my drive fail for any reason, I can make a new drive or, alternatively, I can recreate the original drive and sell my xbox in an unmodded state!

Thanks for the quick reply Slaeyer, but I had the 120gb drive working fine for at least 6 months. I can't figure out why it would crap out on ANY of my 120gb drives out of nowhere. Any good place to find a spare PSU or should I just try a new system? I'm not that concerned, considering I can still run all of my apps on the stock drive. I'm just missing out on ripping games and storing larger roms on the 120gb drive.

I'm having problems getting this this tutorial to work. The only difference I know of is that I took all the save folders out of UDATA to bring the size of the ISO down for burning - does the ISO need anything in there? I created the ISO but when I go to run it, its really buggy with errors and many reboots. I'm trying different bios settings though. I finally got it to work and after it asked if I wanted to create a fatx partition, it froze up again with "y" going down the screen. Then I finally got it to work again and when it was creating C and E drives it was REALLY slow - it took about 2 hours. Even with a 16x cd-rom drive it shouldn’t take that long. It finally finished and I locked the drive. When I installed it in the Xbox I got different errors depending on the jumper setting but none of those setting worked after trying them all.

The hard disk I'm using used to have the NTFS system before I supposedly (the formatting seemed too fast to really have done anything) reformatted with FATx - does that matter?

I'm out of ideas beyond that.

From my experience, make sure that your Optical Drive (CD-ROM) is on the IDE1 channel and that your hard drive is on IDE2 when connected to your PC. If they are flipped, you can still boot from the CD, however, I know firsthand that it will just "fly" through the process. You should get several prompts for "yes"

XboxHDM does not need anything in the E folder for this tutorial to work, the xbox will recreate that partition upon 1st boot using it's default settings. If you're not transferring any gamesaves, or have what you want to transfer backed up, don't worry about the E.

The formatting process is very quick while the copying process will take some time depending on the amount of data to be copied. In my experience, 5 - 10 minutes to copy 100 or so MB of data to the C partition is not uncommon. Locking is also very quick, taking only a few seconds.

Some other suggestions that seem to help others, burn the CD at the slowest recording speed your burner will support, verify the recording, make sure the new hard drive is set as Primary Master (/dev/hda in linux) and the CD-ROM is Secondary Master (/dev/hdc in linux) with no other drives hooked up, if all else fails, try another computer and try recreating the CD image.

When installing the drive into the xbox, setting the drive as cable select usually works. If the drive supports Master with no Slave present, you may try that option as well. Different drives and xbox revision combinations seem to prefer a different setup, experiment with what works to find your "perfect setup".

There are alot of posts in this thread and reading it through till the end will answer many questions others have already asked. If everything fails, try contacting the developer(s) of XboxHDM and see what they have to say!

Lastly, a GREAT explanation of Xbox Error Codes and their meaning is here

Thanks for sharing your experience. I would think I would need the E folder because it has my softmod files - not to mention my current dash, XBMC.

I will try the stuff you suggested. Does it matter that the HDD was formerly NTFS? I was thinking I should try the fatx format over a fat format (maybe it would work faster).

I should note, if you do not have a backup of your homebrew / games, etc, you will want to back them up via ftp before you make a boot disc that does not contain an E folder, but neither the XboxHDM software nor the Xbox itself require these folders (in my experience).
I doubt the previous format of the drive would make any difference, if you're worried about the drive's integrity or not having a clean format, use a tool like Dban before you format the drive. Dban will overwrite every sector of the drive (including sectors reserved for partition map, master boot record, etc.) with psuedo-random data (useful for *cough* hiding one's tracks too) from a bootlable CD-ROM or floppy disk. The result is a clean drive that was error checked (somewhat) during zeroing free of junk from multiple formatting, deletions, etc.

Must use a drive that supports locking. List at the beginning of this thread shows drives confirmed to work.
