Hi guys..been doing a lot of reading on softmodding and putting a large HDD in the Xbox. SID 4.0 works wonderfully.
My problem is that when I try to lock the drive, the cd tells me that it cannot find eeprom.bin and therefore will not lock the drive. Ive read that you have to make sure it is in the right location....so to be safe, I copied it into every folder on the dvd before I burnt it and it still cannot find it. Can I type in the code manually? which is the right key to type in? I looked on the HDDinfo.txt from the Xbox and it has the following:

    XboxCDKey 32 characters
    and
HDDKey 40 characters followed by 24 zeroes.

Which is the correct key to type in?

Update: I went into the DOS part and used HDLOCK and put in my HDDKey without all the zeroes at the end. It said drive was successfully locked with that code so I put it in the Xbox and got an error 5. What does that mean?

I ran into a similar issue myself once, no matter how many discs I created, XBOXHDM couldn't find the EEPROM.BIN file. I solved it by copying the EEPROM.BIN to a floppy disk, i.e. A:\EEPROM.BIN . Use the DOS boot selection on the XBOXHDM cd you created, when it asks where the file is, point it to the floppy drive.

Ouch!!! You need to have more patience and wait for someone to help you!

You have now locked you code with a made up eeprom! This will almost render the drive completely useless!

If you can, use the same code you used to unlock the drive again, if not consult my tutorials for further unlocking help!

As for the CD not finding the eeprom, the answer was very simple!

The correct filename is 'eeprom.bin'. The CD CANNOT find 'EEPROM.BIN'

Makes me glad I have the receipt. I can take drives back as many times as needed to get this done. I just wish I didnt have to drive 25 miles 1 way to do it.
So I went out and exchanged the 2nd western digital for a Maxtor Model# STM3200820A 200 GB hard drive. Came home, Opened the package, put the receipt away fearing I would need it yet again and tried once again to set up the drive. This time, I got the following message when I typed in lockhd -a
"Drive on Primary Master is frozen. Cannot change the security status of a frozen drive. Try to disable automatic detection on the primary IDE channel in your PC BIOS and reboot."

    wtf??
I checked 3 compatibility charts before selecting this drive and all 3 say I can lock the drive with no trouble. Why in the hell am I having so much trouble?
and this time, before I did anything, I checked all the files on the CD and eeprom.bin was in fact lowercase. I even backed it up to the root of a floppy disk, but never got that far due to the error above.

    Yo 1234wtf try this

1.Start your computer with no drive on the pri master ide cable.
2.Let the floppy boot til its says (a:\) now plug yor harddrive to the ide cable(start with powercord then the ide) and run ATAPWD.
It should now not be frozen .
3.Exit ATAPWD and type unlockx it should say lockable and unlocked then run your desired lock program. for you it mybe lock -a.
If you manually lock your drive you may have to restart the computer for it to read that its unlocked, probally the same for lock -a

I have a similar question. Suppose you take the hard-drive from a softmodded xbox, and put it in an xbox which has not been softmodded. Would it work?

No... the eeprom is different for each xbox. That difference alone will prevent the xbox from unlocking the drive. You may softmod the xbox and obtain the eeprom.bin and use that to change the lockcode on the drive first and then it would theoretically work as that's really the only difference between different xboxes. The software is the same!

It sounds like it would be easier to just mod the new one from the beginning. Thanks for letting me know.

IF i were to just FTP into my xbox without any extra "GEAR" and then send that info into a new fresh HDD would that possibly work? or does it have to be locked?

Hey i've got a quick question, would this method work using a mac, i've got a G4 sitting in my room and it would be easier to open it up then my PC. If set up the disc and everything on my PC then set the mac to boot from disc would it work?

    Thanks

No, the xboxhdm software hasn't been compiled to run on a PPC Macintosh and Intel Macs lack IDE drive ports.

    Hi,

My Xbox appears to be on it's last legs. HDD is making ticking/grinding noises so I have decided to make a backup using the tutorial in this thread.

I have built two HDD now and neither work. I am using a Hitachi drive and Maxtor drive both are compatible with the Xbox.

I am using xboxhdm. I have a 1.6 Xbox / Pal. The drive has been locked using the eeprom file. I keep getting Xbox service code 13. I have read up on this and the solution I feel doesn't apply to me as I have followed all of those steps. My dash is also up to date.

I used the Krazie Ndure softmod (http://www.productwiki.com/microsoft-xbox/article/how-to-go-from-xbox-to-xbox-media-center-in-30-minutes.html). Could I be using the wrong eeprom backup file? What files must I have in C and E partitions? When using xboxhdm I created a F partition is this ok? Any help would be much appreciated its starting to drive me bonkers.

    Many Thanks,

    Dan
