is 915 so might not have to re-install xp. how much ram on old board as might be able to use it on new board if pc3200 or just get 2 to 4 1gig ram modules for 2 to 4 gig? i presume have dvd burner?
upto you than about ram. is your monitor crt or lcd? how about getting a ups(battery backup). might need bigger psu because of new videocard say at least 400 watts.
get at least a 400 watt or higher psu. really depends on videocard power requirements. also go for external usb2/firewire hd which can be used for backup & used on other computers.
I bought the mobo, the pci/e Geforce 6600GT 128MB 128-bit video card, and two 512mb sticks of RAM. But I forgot about the psu. And I need it because this stock 250 watts isn't enough. So I'm heading back out to get a 400watt psu. I already have two external hd, so I'll be ready to rebuild today.
I just wanted to let everyone know that I finshed installing that new Mobo and video card. It's up and it looks good and the graphics are so awsesome that I had to upgrade my LCD moniter from 17" to 20"! I love it. It tooks longer than usual because I ran into a few problems. Made a few rookie mistakes. The biggest one was when I was trying to uninstall Microsoft Defender because that beta version was buggy. I couldn't uninstall the program using the "remove program" from XP. So I tried to do it myself by messing around in the registry with REGEDIT. Later on, I get messages saying some DLL files were missing. Instead of me searching my computer for these files. I go on the internet and get these files from John Doe and Co. and I extracted these files right into my Win32 folder and after the re-boot, everything went into slo motion until it locked for good 5 minutes later. "F8" couldn't rescue me this time. I was just happy that I backed everything up.
So you're up and running again? And you did install the drivers for the card, right? The you should be good. The 6600GT is still a zippy little card. It is starting to show its age a little in more recent games but it should serve you well You now have a quick little gaming system. Enjoy
Oh yeah, I installed the card. The graphics are awesome. But I have a question. Ever since I upgraded my moniter to 20", it seems as if the system is starting up slower and running slower. Could that happen? I noticed the resolutions shot up to 1280 X 1024. It could be the software that come with it. Do I really need it? Because the display program from XP works just fine for me. All that extra stuff like rotating the screen isn't worth the resources it's taking from my system. That graphic card came with it's display program and lot extra crap also. Can remove that stuff while keeping the drivers. It came bundled up in one package.
Try completely uninstalling your drivers and getting the newest ones from the Nvidia site. That might be your problem. Pack-in drivers that come with most video cards are usually outdated and can sometimes cause problems. If that doesn't work you might have screwed something up by deleting those files from Win32. Sometimes the association with the file is lost and can't be regained just by replacing the file. You might have to reformat and reinstall Windows. That would be just about the only real sure-fire way to fix the problem. A fresh install of XP with fresh drivers will run lightning fast.
I was thinking the exact thing last night. I regretted chosing to repair Windows instead of doing a fresh re-install. But before I do that I'm going remove all this extra software that came with the video card and moniter. Next I'm going to seeif any updated drivers are available from that manufacture. And I'll go from there.
