i called rogers yesterday, as they are the one's that deal with my phone. the guy there told me that the t720 could not be used as a modem as it is the wrong kind of phone. to save yourself a lot of grief give your provider a call and make sure that your phone is capable of being used as a modem.

This is a simple text document on how -to set up your pc or laptop with an
internet connection through your wireless phone.

I had a problem using the t720 as a modem for months after using it successfully for a year.
The string at the bottom of this note was the thing that got me back on.
    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    1. First thing you need is a cable between the phone and the pc. Verizon sells
the appropriate cables with software at a much higher price. If you are just
looking for a cheap solutions - go to ebay.com or just search on the web -
you can get the appropriate stuff for 20-30 $.
    2. Second thing is making it work. This will cover Redhat 9. I read that for
earlier versionsof RedHat, another person had to modify and recompiler the
drivers for USB in Linux to detect the Modem. My way is much easier:
    a) first I have the Motorola t720 with Verizon.
    b) the cable I got is a USB cable. (the other option will be a serial one)
    c) my operating system is RedHat 9.0 on a p4 Laptop ( i dont think any thing
    else is significant).

    So here it is:
*) after RedHat has booted, I plug in the phone, and the cable in my USB
    port.
*) this is the message I get in the "dmesg":
hub.c: new USB device 00:03.2-1, assigned address 2
usb.c: USB device 2 (vend/prod 0x22b8/0x2822) is not claimed by any active
    driver.
    usb.c: registered new driver acm
    ttyACM0: USB ACM device
acm.c: v0.21:USB Abstract Control Model driver for USB modems and ISDN
    adapters
*) i guess for older version of RedHat or if you dont get that - check to see
if you have these drivers or look them up on the web.

and there it is: you new modem is sitting at /dev/input/ttyACM0
*) to use it just open kermit and dial-out whereever you want. Theoretically
dialing #777 on Verizon should get you an internet connection but it never
    worked for me.
*) to use it as a DialUp connection (similar to Winbozz) just open under
System Tool in RH9 the internet Connection Wizzard and this will walk you
through it. (Hint::you actually connect through by Activating the device ;O)

    Making it work with Verizon:
    ---------------------------------
Under Windows I had to put the following "AT$QCMDR=2;AT$QCQNC=1;" in the field
extra initialization commands. Without it, it would disconnect before
"Verifying user name and password" so the connection with verizon would never
    be established.

    To specify initialization commands
You must be logged on as an administrator or a member of the Administrators group in order to complete this procedure. If your computer is connected to a network, network policy settings may also prevent you from completing this procedure.

Open Phone and Modem Options in Control Panel.
On the Modems tab, click the modem you want to configure.
Click Properties, and then click the Advanced tab.
In Extra initialization commands, type the commands that should be sent to the modem when it is initialized.
    Notes

I have not tried connecting to Verizon under Linux ( I will whenever I have
    time)..

    Hey 1-2-3.

Its ME, and I called ROGER-RE: CSD connections.

They transfer me around 6times before finally someone was brite enough to know that CELL can be USB MODEM.

YES, she say she know my phone is CSD capable with the CSD settings and all...BUT ROGERS ONLY SUPPORT GPRS ON THE NETWORK.

So I told her, I want to use the USB v300 as modem to call in to my dial-up ISP as a CSD connection.
Reply, You have a GSM to take advantage of GPRS we only have GPRS on ur v300. So you pay what u transmit and recv not the time connected.

    >So if I get a PDF file from work about 2mb my whole month's of GPRS is GONE? YES YES.

I dont think so. There must be another way besides GPRS to connect online with our phones.

OUR PHONES CAN GET US ONLINE, WHY WON'T OUR CARRIER SUPPORT THAT !

When i try that string all i get is this, the was a hardware failure in the modem (or other connecting device). I can get online with the gsm or what ever its called but want to use the phone has modem to the dial up.

    Hi Guys,

I'm not the most advanced techie but I do have a dial up ISP. This is www.revealed.net. Just a standard supplier of email service etc.

I connect the usb cable (only into the top USB port on my Thinkpad T40) and have the cell phone (t-720)dial up my account at Internet Revealed and it makes the noises, asks for password, logs on just like a regular modem. I suppose Verizon charges me for minutes if I do this in the daytime...but usually I wait until after 9 at a motel, when the minutes are free. Verizon considers it a regular phone call and it usually hooks up at 200kbps or more.

I don't understand some of the technical stuff you guys are running into.

    Karl
