Well All DVD Recorders will let you Record from VHS to DVD without a Computer...I actually do not think there is a way to do it with a Computer and a DVD recorder....

A DVD Recorder is Basicly the Same as a VCR but it uses DVD"s so you Just hook your VCR up to the DVD Recorder and Record away...If the VHS Tapes are Retail VHS tapes you will need to get a Video Stabilizer to remove the Macrovision Copy protections....

So "Yes" you should get one if you want to do quick and easy VHS to DVD Transfers...I don"t believe it is Nescessarry to get a Dual Layer recorder because the Blank Dual Layered DVD"s are between $10 and $15 each were you can get regular single Layered DVD"s for about 0.25c each in Bulk.....

    Cheers

Thanks Minion for such a quick response. I appreciate your guidance and advice. I agree about the double layer DVDs. I could buy many of the tapes inthe DVD format for the cost of the blank Double Layer DVDs. These are all retail VHS tapes. Some as old as 25 to 26 years.

I am somewhat confused about the need for a "Video Stabilizer." None of the mfrs. literature mention this issue, but I believe You. Where would this piece of gear go? I guess it has to be connected in before the recorder. Is it simple or is it over my head? Again, I ask for your guidance and wisdom.

This note has been delayed about 2 hours because my cable company was down for repairs.

    Many thanks,

dragon424: Most Store Bought VHS Tapes made within the Last 25 or so Years will Have an Analogue Copy Protection called "Macrovision" which causes the Video to Go From Dark to Bright to Dark ect and Cause Distortian in the Video Image when Trying to Copy them.....

There are a Few devices out there that will remove the Copy Protection and Stabilize the Video Signal so you get a Proper Copy of the Tape...These devices go in between the VCR and the Capture Card or DVD Recorder and the Ones I have tried worked quite well....

    These devices should work:

Purchase CopyThis! Digital Video Enhancer and Duplicator Model CT-1 made by SIMA for $69.00 US, at FRY's Electronics. Can be purchased at any major electronics store. Maybe bestbuy, Compusa or Radio Shack.
I backed up another full copy protected VHS. But this time I connected the enhancer in between my vhs player and Digital camcorder. And copied the movie into Hi8 8mm tape and then connected my camcorder with the recorded movie to the external writer, HP dvd dc5000 purchased for 199.00. The result is DVD quality movie. Outstanding.

Hi, I'm a newb. WOW! Great information in this thread. Minion, you are the best! I just ordered a Voyetra Turtle Beach Video Advantage card PCI. http://www.turtlebeach.com/site/products/vidadv/producthome.asp My budget wouldn't allow a Canopus product. I was wondering if anyone has used it or has any comments. The product looks perfect for want I want to do. I currently have a Dazzle DVC80 which works fine but it captures only at 320x240 and my dvd looks grainy and ugly.

Hi ,That Card looks like it has a Lot of Features and it uses a 10 Bit decoder Chip so it should Produce fairly good Quality but if you want to capture the best quality with that Card you should Capture to a Low Compression AVI format which will require a Lot of Disk Space, Like anywere from 30 to 60GB Per Hour but you can Still get Pretty good quality if you capture Directly to Mpeg-2 useing a Good Mpeg capture program....
Your Card will also be Much better than the Dazzle DVC80 which is a terrorable Device and Only captures at 320+240 were this new Card should be able to Capture at Full DVD Resolution.....

    Cheers

I now went to my old vhs tapes and ran across the copy protect problem AGAIN!, I cannot say how disappointed I am so far, is there a cheap software solution to this!, my rial copy of office will expire soon and I am getting hot under the collar over SONY and MS, this is highway robbery I paid over a G for the machine and I all I get is money grubbing corporations trying to suck some more hard earned moola and no solutions?

You can easilly get DVD"s on to your Hard Drive with DVD Decryptor or Smartripper and your DVD drive of course....

Captureing From VHS is a Different Story because that is an Analogue Copy Protection so you would need a Little device called a "Video stabilizer" to remove the Copy protection when Captureing....

I have icopydvds2 can that help in any way?

and Thank you for the reply.

Any comments or opinions about Canopus ProCoder 2.0 vs TMPGEnc for conversion quality and speed?

Hi, Canopus procoder is a higher Quality mpeg encoder than tmpgenc but it is Just as slow as Tmpgenc...
The Best encoder is probably CinemaCraft Encoder SP and it is also the fastest but it is also more complicated to use than other encoders....

With the DVD standalone recorders coming down in price why mess around with all the software etc...even Canopus (which I have used and finally sold) Your VCR and a Panasonic,Lite-On, Toshiba, Phillips etc etc is so easy and painless.

Make great quality VCR backups. After struggling with Canopus(an excellent product) the quality was not what my Toshiba or Phillips makes along with TIME. I was having to babysit the whole process. Now I can either elect to watch the movie or walk away.

    Hi,

First i'd like to thank you all for this very informative thread :)

Here is my "problem", i'm looking to transfer lot's of vhs onto dvd...
for this purpose i bought a couple of months ago an ADS Tech DVD Xpress usb box
and after trying every settings possible with the capture software (Capture Wizard v3.5)
and i'm a bit disappointed quality wise, i know those are mostly old vhs so i'm not
looking to get a dvb quality picture..
my main concern is the fact that most of the time i seem to loose some colors,
kind of drop outs in the color which is frequently repeated...
For its defense the little box makes a nice job when directly capturing the tv...

The vhs (secam/pal/ntsc) i'm looking to transfer are all from things i've recorded from tv
or dubbed from camcorder, nothing "officialy or commercially" distributed (so no macrovision ?!?)...

    pc equipment:

    Pentium 4 3.0C Ghz
    Asus P4P800-E Deluxe MB
    1GB PC3200 (400Mhz) RAM
    120GB Western Digital WD1200JB HD
120GB Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 9 HD
    Creative SoundBlaster Live! Platinum DriveII
ATI Radeon 9600 Pro 256MB DDR
    ADS Tech DVD Xpress

I'm using an Akai tri-standard vcr to play the vhs which is connected to the DVD Xpress box
thru a handmade (peritel >> s-video + 2 rca) cable which goes to the pc thru usb2 port.

I saw you were talking about some video enhancer boxes to get in between the vcr and the
    capture usb box.

Do you think this could solve my problem ?

And if yes are those model good to make the thing ?

No, not video enhancers...actual stand alone recorders. I a picky on quality and also not spending all my life transfering mountains of stuff I had recorded on Video from TV (Movies mainly)

You would be money a head and time a head buying ...at least looking online and comparing prices for standalones. You hook your vcr up to the recorder, put in a blank DVD press RECORD and voila...you make a DVD that easy. As easy as playing a DVD. I don't have the Lite-on but it has good reviews and I'm thinking about getting one for trial and because it will record on either + or -. Whereas Phillips records on +R and Toshiba, Panasonic, Sony on -Rs.
