It says it's on a Thermal Right 120. The thing is that G0 stepping CPUs don't get that hot so you don't need water cooling.

No hard feeling Ray, I'm not trying to downplay what you have. I'm just saying for the people here that can't afford water cooling that air cooling is an excellent option of you get good enough parts.

Ok, so I've re-installed Crysis, and I've installed the very high quality mod that Ray posted. I took a dip into the water on the first level and this is what I got:

Sorry it's a bit dark but I hope you should be able to see some shadows of rocks in the water. Now, according to the 'no 8800GT shadows in the water' rule, does this apply to every rock in every bit of water or does the 8800 only miss out some? I'll have to play on a bit and find the scenes from the VRzone sshots. One thing is for sure, with vhq I have two options; 1024x768 with 4xAA or 1280x1024 with no AA. In high it would run 1280 with AA but now it's noAA or 20fps!

It only misses out some, surely you an just look at the picture and see that. It's not that there aren't any shadows, it's just that some don't look right. Without a 3870 for comparison you may not even notice - hence why nvidia do it.

Sorry guys but I think I might go with a 8800GT in my next build. I didn't notice a big difference in those pics and it IS faster. If it were up to me I would still get a 3870, but honestly it's easier to sell a computer with a 8800 series card.

Yeah I guess so. Maybe just MAYBE I might get a 3870 because of personal bias.

I have a person coming to buy this baby on monday! for a grand.

abuzar, you are banned from this thread if you do that!

heres something weird I found: The first bench is with CF enabled, second without, etc. CF disabled actually increases the FPS in Crysis. Slightly weird if you ask me...

I think that when ATI releases the new drivers the 3870 will be faster. So... ha!

Well wait and see eh? It's got a bit of a way to catch up, I doubt they'll make it faster in all those games with just a driver release.

Abuzar, I was just kidding, I dont care what you get! lol

I would just think that after being involved in this 1400 post thread mostly on Ati, then you would consider getting a 3870. But oh well, who cares?

What other parts are you getting?

If you've noticed I prefer the HD 3870 MYSELF. Thing is if I have to sell the PC the 8800GT is going to be easier to sell to the consumer.

I'm thinking of going Quad Core now, also because people are more willing to buy that. I haven't made a full parts list yet. I'll only be pushing the Quad Core to 3.6Ghz so I don't need PC-8500 Memory. Either way an 8800GT or a 3870 will be a huge improvement over my 3850.

Waymon: Lol that is indeed what happens if a game doesn't work properly with crossfire. It's normal to lose a few fps in that event.
Abuzar: Wishful thinking my friend, but I'm all for it... (about the driver update) as far as 8800GT goes, I'm probably going to agree with you, not so nice to have, but easier to sell. Nvidia is without doubt the 'fanboy' brand. That's not to say you have to be a fanboy to buy one, but you don't exactly see many ATi fanboys around (at least I haven't). With AMD/Intel it seems about even.

I'd be inclined to agree. But then they do make the ultra, which is the fastest card you can buy, so it'd be easy to say Nvid was best if you looked at it at that level. I'm sure there are plenty of ATi fans out there too tho!

Sam, when I pop into the forums at incrysis.com, I see that a lot people are nagging to get CF/SLi working. The first patch was supposed to fix that... I do see an increase from around 14k to 18.5k in 3dmark06 though, so I know it is working.

MaccerM: I don't doubt it, but evidence suggests they're in fewer numbers. Hats off to nvidia for making the most powerful GPU out there. If we could get something with the power of the ultra but the image quality of the HD3870, we'd finally be making progress...

You know as far as drivers go ATI has REALLY stepped it up. Last driver update was an increase of about 10 fps in most games for many people. ATI drivers used to suck ass before.

^I know! I remember when no one would buy a ATi product just because of their drivers. But then the Omegas came out and those worked pretty good - but you shouldnt have to download 3rd party drivers to get a product working.

I'm running the 8.1s now, might consider moving to the Omegas, just to try em out. I've had no problems with the 8.1s so far...
