    Greetings Kafka,

    Right off the top, with a quick scan, I don't see anything really "Bad". I will comb the logs deeper though...

    Got a question..
    I don't see an AV or Firewall running, did you uninstall Avast and turn on Defender?
    I know on Win7 I can't see the windows Firewall but am not sure about the AV on Win8 since it has been incorporated with Defender...

    Let me know. I'll be going over the logs.

    Tnx

    I uninstalled Avast and activated Defender. I have found on occasion that defender is not running and I have to switch it on, which is a new thing.

    Have I got too much stuff on my computer? I must admit to being a bit obsessive when it comes to cleaning the registry and removing malware. Whilst uninstalling software using Revo Uninstaller I have noticed that I have lots of programs which I can't identify and am therefore reluctant to remove.

    As regards scorpNZ's comments and yours following, I am embarrassed to admit that I am not new to the world of computers. I bought my first in the late 70's (a TI99) and got my first one at work in 1983. My expertise was in spreadsheets and databases. When I had a technical problem I rang the I.T. section.

    Here's a classic its not a joke these people are actual customers of mine.

    My background is automtive mechanic also worked on lawnmower repairs a few years later,at the mow i'm a self employed lawnmowing contractor,the hours are much better..lol..

    a customer throws out an old IBM thinkcenter the ones that sit flat & can have a monitor on top has a intel D cpu 2.8ghz,i ask can i have it,yes i can,ok get it home,managed to get it going,found a whole stack of family photo's 3gb worth,thought i'd better contact em,sure enough they wanted them,as a replacement computer they had
    bought a 2nd hand laptop dual core somth'n or rather,one of the daughters brought it around as i had the photos on a thumb drive would'nt take long to transfer them or so i thought,ok laptops here,open lid sould make it boot,waiting,waitig,waiting..wtf...all seems to be working including hdd,arghhhhhh hit the power button shut it off then hit it again to reboot,ok alls working & again waiting for desktop to appear,no kidd'n around 3-4minutes later things start to happen after 6-7mins desktop is there but man this thing lags like the playstation 2 did online on a 256mb connection,its so slow wtf,to cut alonger story short,could'nt transfer the files the 120gb hdd had only 800mb free space left,the 3 seperate user accounts had so much junk most probably music,no defrag & i assume at least 1-2 years of history etc on there the dam thng could'nt move..lol..most probably has viruses & malware but who'd know all the programs would be fighting each other for cpu & ram space they'd all cancel themselves out,totally unbelievable that you would think they'd notice it slowing down more & more as they used it

    Yes, you do have too much Foistware. Which is programs that you really didn’t know you were installing as they came with another program and were installed because you used the express install and didn’t uncheck that you didn’t want them. An old trick to get the software distributed. Their not really “Bad” but their not “Good” either. You have the Chrome browser that is installed when you install Avast. I really don’t like it for the simple reason that it’s made by Google and they are known for not respecting your privacy. I use Firefox. McAfee Security came with Adobe because you didn’t uncheck the box. It’s not Bad but not real good and conflicts with other AV software. DriverMax is a laugh. You don’t need driver update software win 8 will take care of it for you. I’ll explain how later. DriverMax will find a lot of drivers that it says need up dating because it will download Beta drivers that still have bugs and duplicate drivers like replacing a AMD driver with a ATI driver that are the same just different company.

    Your computer has a dual core processor @ 1.86 GH, a little slow to run a lot of programs in the background and most of this stuff sets itself to run at Boot whether you need it or not.

    It will take me a little time to work up some stuff for you so please hang in there.

    After I graduated HS, 1960, I took a 2 year course in Mathematics and Computer Science. In 1965 went to work for a Railroad Co. programming an IBM 65 that took up 2 large rooms. Built my first mainframe computer in 1970. Bought my first PC, a TRS80 model I in 1976 or 77?. Worked for Tandy corp. as computer marketing manager for a couple of yrs. Then head of IT dept for Hotel chain for last 25 yrs. Just retired this year. Been building computers for customers and clients, on the side, for the last 15 years.

    The computer, I am using here, I built about 2 yrs ago. AMD 6 cores @ 4.2 GHz and 3 TB hard drive space.

    I have a Honey-Do list from the wife, so will get back as soon as I can with some fixes for you..

    Hi Kafka,

    This will get you started while I continue looking over the logs.

    1.) Use Revo to uninstall these:

    DriverMax 7
    SUPERAntiSpyware - use Malwarebytes it’s much better!
    McAfee Security Scan Plus
    TomTom HOME - Bad it calls in other bad software.
    TomTom HOME Visual Studio Merge Modules
    Advanced Uninstaller PRO - Keep Revo it’s better.
    PeaZip 4.9 - keep 7-Zip 9.20 it’s better.

    2.) Fix entries using HiJackThis

    Launch HiJackThis
    Click the Do a system scan only button
    Put a check next to the entries listed below (if they still remain)

    Note: This will not remove the programs. It just keeps them from running in the background and you can still use them when needed.

    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {45564571-A21B-48ED-B584-69752EEE9C3D} - (no file) this is deleted. It’s dead!

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Adobe ARM] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\ARM\1.0\AdobeARM.exe"
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AmIcoSinglun] C:\Program Files\AmIcoSingLun\AmIcoSinglun.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [IgfxTray] C:\Windows\system32\igfxtray.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Persistence] C:\Windows\system32\is.exe
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Gadwin PrintScreen] C:\Program Files\Gadwin Systems\PrintScreen\PrintScreen.exe /nosplash
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [PC Suite Tray] "C:\Program Files\Nokia\Nokia PC Suite 7\PCSuite.exe" -onlytray
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Skype] "C:\Program Files\Skype\Phone\Skype.exe" /minimized /regrun

    IMPORTANT: Do NOT click fix until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now
    Click the Fix checked button and close HiJackThis

    3.) AVG secure search tool bar is as close to malware that you can get from a reputable company.

    It is very difficult to remove from the Chrome browser but this should work:

    AVG Browser Configuration Tool
    You can use AVG Browser Configuration Tool to uninstall AVG Toolbar and revert all changes:
    Download the AVG Browser Configuration Tool.

    1. Run the downloaded file AVG_Browser_configuration_tool.exe.
    2. Click Accept to confirm the license agreement.
    3. Click Continue to start the removal process.
    Note: This will close all your browser windows.
    4. You may receive a prompt from Internet Explorer or other browsers about your preferred search engine.
    5. Click Exit to close the tool.

    When done please ask about anything you don’t understand and let me know how it’s working.

    If all goes well, run Malwarebytes, remove anything it finds and post a log..

    Tnx

    P.S.
    @Kafka,

    Here's a video that shows how to set Win 8 to automatically update your drivers without using crummy software. Keeps you updated with no worry.... Just keep your windows updates set to download and install..

    Kafka,

    Haven't heard from you in a few days. How are things going?
    You appear to be just about clean except for that load of programs that you probably don't use most of them.
    I am concerned that your AV and Firewall are working.. Let me know...

    I'm back! Yesterday was my wife's birthday and I thought it would be maritally unwise to spend much time on the compute.

    I uninstalled all the programs you listed and did everything else you suggested. The Malware log follows. The computer is running fine, however I still find that when I boot up in the morning I have to manually turn on Defender. This is despite the fact that it is set to run permanently. I no longer have any other anti-virus installed. Perhaps it will run permanently now that I have done all those things you suggested. Here is the log:

    A quick question on a related matter. I want to schedule backups of my data drive to an external hard drive. What do you reckon is the best free software to do this? I have tried Syncredible which worked fine for a while but then ran into problems. At the moment I am trying ToDo Backup but so far I've been unable to schedule the backup.

    Is the any point in backing up my C drive?

    Yes and please don't worry about backing up just yet. We have a ways to go:)
    I don't have much time but, in next post or so I will explain how to protect your data and your operating system so that you will probably never loose anything again and you will be able to fix an infected or crashed boot drive and not loose your operating system, programs, settings or data.. Just stick with me..

    Right now I am concerned about your AV turning off.. Re-install Avast and just turn off Defender. Avast is much better than MSE for AV and Malware protection. Then you will need to uninstall most of that mound of programs that most are useless. After that we will set you up on a backup and recovery plan.

    I can find nothing in the logs that would indicate you have a bad guy that's turning off your AV and some of the software that I am use to using is not compatible with Win 8, but I'll figure it out.

    Hang in there and we'll get the bugs out.[IMG]

    I hear that! Even though I'm the King of my household and run everything.. (the vaccuum cleaner, washer/dryer, dish washer, etc. etc,) [IMG]

    Couple of questions:
    Do you have a Router?
    Is your Windows Firewall working?
    Is the Avast AV working OK?

    Also you can start eliminating some of the Bloatware. There’s a “LOT” and will take some time but needs to be done to get your computer ready for Hardening against Malware and Data lose.

    Here is a list of your installed programs… You can find out what it is by copy/past the name into Google. Make the decision if you really need it or not and if not uninstall it. If you are not sure please ask me and we can work it out together.
    Don’t delete anything unless you really understand what it is!!!!

    I have uninstalled a whole lot of stuff, however some I couldn't find via Revo Uninstaller and others I wasn't sure about, such as:

    Classic Shell
    Common
    Contents
    Core Temp 1.0 RC4
    DeviceIO
    ICA
    ISCOM
    Microsoft Application Error Reporting
    Realtek High Definition Audio Driver (for my speakers?)
    VIO
    VSClassic
    VSPro

    I have never been sure whether I need to keep such files as:

    Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Redistributable
    Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable - x86 9.0.21022

    PS, in answer to your questions, I don't have a router and both my firewall and Avast are working.

    * Classic Shell - Junk that you can do without, IMHO

    Classic Shell™ is a collection of usability enhancements for Windows. The main features are:
    • Highly customizable start menu with multiple styles and skins
    • Start button for Windows 7 and Windows 8
    • Toolbar and status bar for Windows Explorer
    • Caption and status bar for Internet Explorer

    * Common - ?

    * Contents - ?

    * Core Temp 1.0 RC4 - used to monitor CPU Core temp. Handy when overclocking or having heat problems. Needed???

    * DeviceIO – if you have a HP printer this is a fix for their Driver but also buggy. Causes pop-ups at shut down and when using the printer.. probably need it if you do have HP printer.. I also see a driver for a Canon Printer do you have both??

    * ICA - ?

    * ISCOM - ?

    * Microsoft Application Error Reporting – This prompts you to send a report to MSoft when a program fails, it’s OK.

    * Realtek High Definition Audio Driver (for my speakers?) – yes OK Audio drivers.

    * VIO – is a free video player – do you use it?

    * VSClassic - ?

    * VSPro - ?

    Note: Everything that I marked with “?” I could find NO info on. See if you can track it down by using the search in Windows Explorer or however it works in Win8….. also see if it can be uninstalled in the windows uninstaller.. Sometimes these things show up in Revo or DDS that may not have an uninstaller in windows. maybe you can find it and decide if you really need it..

    You need these:

    Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Redistributable
    Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable - x86 9.0.21022

    Just keep chipping away at it. How do you eat an elephant? One small Byte at a time….. lol

    I’m working up some other stuff for you to think about and will get back to you as soon as I can. My wife has been on a roll and it’s cutting into my play time. [IMG]
