    * Reboot your computer in Safe Mode (before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually)
    * Double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
    * Select 2 and hit Enter to delete infect files.
    * You will be prompted: Do you want to clean the registry ? answer Y (yes) and hit Enter in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.
    * The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found): Replace infected file ? answer Y (yes) and hit Enter to restore a clean file.
    * A reboot may be needed to finish the cleaning process. The report can be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

    Send contents of that file and HijackThis log, instructions ->

    hi kemisti,

    sorry to just jump in, but i got hit with this blasted thing too! i would really appreciate your help with getting rid of it. i hope you don't mind if i post my log files for you to look at!

    ok, so i've run the SmitFraudFix tool, and after completion of the cleaning operation, the rapport.txt file looks like this (sorry, i don't have one from prior to running the tool):

    SmitFraudFix v2.55

    Scan done at 13:55:53.42, Wed 06/07/2006
    Run from C:\Documents and Settings\Holly\Desktop\SmitfraudFix
    OS: Microsoft Windows XP [Version 5.1.2600] - Windows_NT
    Fix ran in normal mode

    this cleaned up the virus alert problem and the various pop-ups that i was getting, but there still seems to be anomalies in the hijackthis log. i'm worried about the R1 results, and the O10 results, but i don't want to just go around deleting things in case i seriously stuff things up. i have also run the new.net uninstall but it didn't seem to make a difference, and symantec tool for getting rid of WebHancer couldn't detect it on the system.

    here is my latest hijackthis log:

    @Carbon13:

    Download SmitfraudFix.zip to your desktop -> http://siri.urz.free.fr/Fix/SmitfraudFix.zip

    Unzip it (folder named SmitFraudFix) to your desktop:

    Open the folder SmitfraudFix and doubleclick smitfraudfix.cmd
    Choose option #1 - Search by typing 1 and pressing "Enter"; a textfile opens and lists the infected files (if those exist)

    Post the contents of this textfile to here.

    (Some antiviruses recognises process.exe as a malware. It is not malware, it is a program that stops processes)

    @malta:

    010's are fine, R1's are bad.

    Fix with HjT (do a system scan only, checkmark these and press fix checked):

    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,SearchURL = prosearching.com
    R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,SearchURL = prosearching.com
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page_bak = prosearching.com
    R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page_bak = prosearching.com
    O20 - AppInit_DLLs: C:\WINDOWS\system32\notepad.dll
    O20 - Winlogon Notify: winmyy32 - winmyy32.dll (file missing)

    Delete -> C:\WINDOWS\system32\notepad.dll

    Reboot and send a fresh HjT log.

    @malta: Well, I don´t know.

    Log looks good.

    I guess you have AVG and McAfee antiviruses. Uninstall one of them.
    If McAfee contains also firewall, disable nvidia firewall.

    @HyDRaLiSk: Create own topic, please and send there HjT log, instrctions -> http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/263784
    This topic getting too messy :(

    @KrieppeN:

    Download SmitfraudFix.zip to your desktop -> http://siri.urz.free.fr/Fix/SmitfraudFix.zip

    @tgauss:

    Download SmitfraudFix.zip to your desktop -> http://siri.urz.free.fr/Fix/SmitfraudFix.zip

    @tgauss:

    Update your smitfraudfix first, version 2.60 should be out.

    After that:

    Fix with HjT:

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [b0cc78e7.exe] C:\WINDOWS\system32\b0cc78e7.exe
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [b0cc78e7.exe] C:\Documents and Settings\tgauss\Local Settings\Application Data\b0cc78e7.exe

    * Reboot your computer in Safe Mode (before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually)

    Delete if found:

    C:\WINDOWS\system32\b0cc78e7.exe
    C:\Documents and Settings\tgauss\Local Settings\Application Data\b0cc78e7.exe

    * Double-click smitfraudfix.cmd

    Send contents of that file and a fresh HjT log
