Want to burn avi files on to DVD

Hi.
I want to burn some downloaded movies onto DVD. All of the files I have are avi. Some of the files say that they are made with DivX, but I'm not sure about the others.
The DVD burner I have is a free copy of Nero that came with my DVD burner. The DVD player I'm using is a Playstation 2.
Is there any program I can use to convert the avi to something Nero will take? Is there another program that will burn the avi files directly onto the DVD without converting them?
I don't care about video quality or if the sound is with the picture. I just want to see the movie.
I'd also like to use the DVD format DVD-RW so I can rewrite the DVD.

PS2 wont play any copied media unless you have the mod chip in it. just FYI

 

Really? I copied a DVD and it played fine.

 

same here just used dvd+rw and it plays fine on newer version ps2's
