having 4 kids of my own that have a pc on the tinternet this is what i think -

iff they have a problem i will help sort it out .

i will encourage them to excell in what they do , if they make a mistake i can be the helping hand ! ( kids will only learn from succsess or failures )

i didnt have anyone snoop on me on my pc so i wont be snooping on them , trust is the order of the day .

I have stopped arguing, let's all have the same debate in 15 or 20 years when Ripper and Auslander have kids.

Your kids are going to be fine. Let's hope, as they grow up, that all you had to worry about was a little porn on the pc! You will have been blessed. :)

Welcome to Afterdawn, are you tall enough for the rides? It can get bumpy here. LOL

i'll be on the same side i am now. having kids won't change my views on life, as i'll rear them the same way i've been lucky enough to have been.

Urm wtf..? Care to expand on that little gem?!

    **Not amused**

Not going to change a thing. I still reserve my right to privacy as will my children.

What I do not "get" here is that there appear to be some who seem to think it all fine/ok to allow kids to do as they wish on a pc as otherwise its an invasion of privacy! Well as a parent who child has abused the trust that was placed in her numerous times I have a real problem with that notion. Also it has implications that are further reaching due to the lack of control exerted over children. Case in point young kids that were out fighting with police (throwing firebombs etc) at all hours in the north of England a number of years ago! Why were those kids not being "supervised" properly in which case they would have been in bed asleep? Another true story is that some kids were killed because a house caught fire! The parent was out at a casino leaving the young kids home alone! She now has to live with that for the rest of her life! Both of these cases show irresponsible parents!

Bottom line: A responsible parent takes an interest in there childrens activites at all times & will take steps to make sure that there principles/standards/morals are maintained as much as possible & if that means watching what they do on a computer then thats life! As someone said they will go to a friends house etc, thats true BUT u can't watch/be with them all the time!

OK lets put it this way...

Would you please install a backdoor trojan so I can use your computer please. I promise I will not do anything naughty. I promise I will not download any virus files and will not do anything illegal.

Of course you wouldn't. You are not stupid and you are not thick. But lets be honest, what you are suggesting when you say kids should be able to surf and download what they want without any supervision is exactly that. You are suggesting handing over your internet connectionn and your computer to a kid.

Now I am not suggesting that an unknown percentage (of which I am sure you are a part) can surf safely, and will not go around treating the net like some big playground and downloading all sorts of rubbish virus files. As the percentage is unknown, I do not even know if you are in a majority or a minority.

I do however know, that not ALL kids are safe. I have seen the effects and had to clean the PC in question. All because some idiot thinks it is kewl to tempt kids in to downloading virus files by teling them it gives them access to free porn.

Don't blame the parents, we don't blame the kids. It is the idiots taking advantage of the kids that causes the problem.

We're not saying it's fine to be looking at porn at such young ages, we're trying to teach them not to look at porn. It's very easy to check all the web sites someone's been on a pc without programs. And if they ARE abusing their free web access, that is easily fixed. Remove the pc from their room and lock down yours so there is no access except for school work where you can look over a shoulder if need be.

I got so fed up with the virus situation (I'm an adult btw & I don't do porn, I got my viruses in the mail) I went and got Linux. You can try to run, you can try to hide, but porn will find you. You litterally have to defend against it if your so inclined LOL.

Porn doesnt find you.. You find it... If you are getting porn pop ups and spam... you or someone IS going somewhere to allow that to happen...lol My girlfriends Dads computer did the same thing.. all he has is a 15 year old daughter at home.. I said "someone is going somewhere they shouldnt" Honestly he is, nor his wife, and supposely neither is his daughter....LOL right... I got on there and found embedded trace files, temp files, registry files, and even "deleted" files...I cleaned it up... I privately ask his daughter and found out she had been going to places she shouldnt have.... My point to this... As a parent you can try hiding,stopping,watching..blah blah and it wont stop them... Main thing is to atleast monitor them on a level tha is not going overboard and envading their privacy... Say what you ant but kids need privacy too.. Just cause you are their parent doesnt mean you have the right to control their lives completely... If you are then..lol I cant wait till they grow up, cause those are the kids that pop up on "girls gone wild"..

Actually my my family and I have those days. But, they have 30 minutes on school days that they can choose between the computer games or playstation, other than that my kids use the internet to look things up. My son is really into astronomy and the internet is full of interesting web sites that he can learn a lot from. I have no problem with him spending extra time doing that. I just want to make sure that he doesn't look at anything else that might spark his interest. Magazines, under the mattress when he's 15, I think I can deal with, but there's some stuff on the internet that's inhuman.
