    I don't know about benq cd-r's but their dvd's are made by daxon and comparable to cmc magnetic junk.

    I think those Taiwanese Maxell CD-Rs should be good along with Fuji CD-Rs which I use the most :)

    Good quality and don't have to break the bank on a pack.

    @sorrow93

    Hi. I'm also in Oz. I recently bought, from Officeworks, some TDK CD-R80PW. I was attracted to them because it had Made in Japan on the box.
    This is a MIJ Taiyo Yuden White Inkjet Printable. Comes in a "premium" White jewel case.

    TYs of types are also available in bulk from PCX. I've tried the "silver/silver", the "That's branded" and the "master grade" gloss inkjet.

    All record and play OK for audio. Can't do any error testing because I only have LG drives (so Nero CD Speed can only do surface scans)

    @Platy767
    fascinating I will look into them, I tend to put up with the very poor section of Dick Smiths Electronics
    I feel like asking them to bump up the selection!
    specifically I'm in Tassie we have one OfficeWorks but it's all the way out in the city :(
    if you happen to see those specific TDKs you mentioned could you send me a link because they sound great?
    better than the taiwan made !!

    Listed on the OW web site, but available "In Store Only"
    TDK 700MB CDR White Inkjet Printable Discs Pk/10
    Product No. TDCDR700WH

    Suggest you try pcx.com.au for Taiyo Yuden in bulk.

    @Platy767 or anyone else
    thankyou kindly for that info.
    I posted a question on another forum related to this - is it okay to write on the inkjet printables with proper cdr/dvdr markers?
    is the writable surface weaker than ordinary?
    sorry to pick your brain but nobody answered the cdr marking post.
    I don't have a suitable inkjet cdr printer
    perhaps someone else might jump in on this?

    Your question has caused considerable debate in the past. Here's a link, you can use your own judgement.

    http://www.digg.com/tech_news/Sharpie_Pens_are_bad_for_CDR-DVD_Media_

    There are specialty cd/dvd markers in stores such as Staples/Walmart, but the price is rather high compared to normal markers. The printable discs may offer some extra protection against solvents, but I'm far from an expert. I use the adage "better to be safe than sorry" I use a special cd/dvd marker, but don't print on the hub as it's too hard to see. Washables, I wouldn't consider because I use dishsoap and water to wash off fingerprints, etc.

    Good brands of CD's.

    Tayio Yuden
    Fuji (the MIJ ones which are made by TY. I guess there's no Fuji MIT out there)
    Ritek Ridata

    I had good luck with Fry's GQ brand a couple years ago. They were made by Lead Data. Don't know who makes them now nor am I interested in getting some.

    So, here are the numbers from my first CD scans.

    All are CD-Rs. All made using the Create Disk function on
    Nero CD-DVD Speed 4.7.0.2.

    All burnt at MAX (24X) on my Laptop DVD Writer, GMA-4082.
    All scanned at 24X on USB external BenQ DW1650.

    The table following provides the results.

    This is not a statisical sample - just 1 disk of each type,
    burned on a laptop internal drive, scanned on an external Benq.
    These are discs I have kept out of a pack or spindle over the passed couple of years from what is freely available in Oz.

    I was concerned that the Verbatim LightScribe (LS) was so much better than the others, I scanned it twice.
    However, the HP branded Verbatim LightScribe was only fair.

    The Taiyo Yuden "Master" grade was no better than a TDK branded TY.

    9 different discs, 6 different brands, 5 different disc manufacturers.

    Disk Type Disk Manufacturer C1 C1 C1

    Urgh. My previous post looks like a dogs breakfast - tabs or spaces not recognised!

    Anyway, the words and numbers are meant to represent:
    Disk supplier, disk manufacturer, C1 MAX, C1 AVE, C1 Total and the Nero Quality rating.

    My HP Lightscribe identifies as Verbatim and the Verbatim Lightscribe identifies as Verbatim. Both have 97m34s23f for MID.

    The Verbatim CD-R and Verbatim Colour CD-R are CMC Magnetics, but the Verbatim DataLifePlus (Super AZO) is a Verbatim

    Edit: add the non-LS Verb details

    Here's the list of CD-R results in a readable format.
    Also, I included a scan on a new commercial pressed disc for comparison.
