    wmv, avi or mpeg 2?
I am not sure of the best format to bring in video from my camcorder to my pc.

is there drawbacks and benefits to each?
Can someone give me some quick bullets and opinions.

My goal in the end is to simple burn each video to DVD.

If your video camera and computer support firewire, then no question, .AVI is the way to go. The files take up lots of room, so make sure that you have a large hard drive

    ok avi is doable..
then what is the best way to conver to DVD?

I have a few options.. Nero, Roxio, Windows.
    Which is better or preffered.

Is one faster than another? Any way to find this out?

It all depends on how much editing that you want to do. I like using the VideoWave portion of Roxio, because Nero is very limited for editing capabilites. At least the 6 Ultra version is.
