    hi all,

I have been going through couple of threads to figure out how I can copy an original dvd(dual layer) onto two single layer dvd`s. I went through previous threads & tried using the links specified in the threads & was surprised to find out that most of them even don`t open up. Tht`s one thing & the other is that even if it works & the program is downloaded & installed ...it dosen`t do what it should do (even though the title sugest it can do the specified work)...now what is a newbie like me gonna do when all this just cheats on me. The whole thing gets a lot more complicated & confusing.
Ofcourse lot of professionals try to help & r very generous , but on a newbies end it ain`t the same case. Lot of things explained r something that a new person has never even herd about before...so then he has to research on it & sometimes with the somewhat knowledge aquired he tries to get it going finally realising it ain`t working..

I have been seeing that lot of people ask similar questions ...but how many of them actually find a solution ?.

A lot of that depends on the person asking. We understand how difficult it may be for those unfamiliar with the process. That's why there are so many guides, a glossary, and stickied threads that offer that knowledge in a step by step format.

In addition to the handy link gwendolin left for you...
This is a thread that offers the best options available, and it comes with links to guides that should help.

    http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/622748

If you have additional questions, post back with your specific problem and someone will be able to help out.

    Good luck.

EDIT: There's also a few handy guides in Gwendolin's siggie. :)

@carbonway.......... I just want you to know that there are plenty of people here, on afterdawn, ready, willing and able to help newbies out. About 3 yrs ago I was a newbie with just one program that didn't really work well for me. I was making plenty of coasters (just in case you don't know what a coaster is it's a failed burn and the disk is only good for drinks to be set on!). I googled and come up with this website and it's the best thing that happened to me. Here, anyone can come in and read what is important to them! They can learn and grow and become self taught from advise from experienced members that are willing to share knowledge that they are happy to give to newer members or guests. I know it can be a daunting task when you don't have any experience at all. But keep in there and you will find your answers you seek. Just because you haven't found an easy answer to what you seek doesn't mean that it's not there. You just didn't come across it yet. It gets easier if you follow guides and use the good advise that you will receive here. Here are some tips for you:

    1. burning speeds: burn at 4x so there will be less writing errors (rule of thumb is to burn at half the rated speed of the disk--8X disk burn at 4x).
    2. read manual for your stand alone player and use the disks that will play in your player. If your player is less than 2 yrs old then it should play the + or - R disks! I said SHOULD that's why you read the manual.
    3. try booktyping your drive to DVd-ROM so it will make your +R disks more compatible to players. Read this:
    http://k-probe.com/bitsetting-booktype-faq.php
    4. make sure that there are no finger prints or scratches on your disk that make it hard for the player to read the disk!
    5. use good quality media (rule of thumb....buy the ones that are Made in Japan.) Verbatim is a top notch disk and is the only exception to this rule....some Verbatims are made in Taiwan and they are top notch!
    6. and don't burn too close to the outer edge of the disk ..... which will make the disk unreadable! but using good media you will be able to burn close to the edge better than lesser quality media. Just in case I only burn no closer than 4400MB, so if you can set your programs to that, all the better!

follow these little tips of the trade and you'll have better success! good luck.

    also read this:
    http://www.cdfreaks.com/reviews/Why-DVDRW-is-superior-to-DVD-RW/
why the +R media is better than the -R media

these tips are simple and can be applied to any programs that you may use. And it will help you become more successful with your burns.

    Welcome to AfterDawn

another thing is that i had dvd shrink installed previously (freeware software)& it never worked because it was not the complete version. The software sugested me to buy it from their website..but since I am not a professional & usually won`t be burning dvd`s that often. So I think I would like to stick to the freeware softwares right now.
any body has a link to dvd shrink version that would work for me?.

    Thanks!

Not sure what you mean carbonway, since DVD Shrink is freeware. The last version ever released was v3.2.0.15 back in July 25, 2005. Here is a link to the last version:
    http://download1us.softpedia.com/dl...28/software/cd_dvd_tools/dvdshrink32setup.zip

Also, let us know the specifications of your computer, especially your DVD burner, so we can assist you more effectively.

One more thing... How are you ripping the original, and with what program?

    1. DVDShrink is a free ware! If some website is asking for money then don't! but understand that DVDShrink is old and not updated anymore. It will still work great with a little help! so..... here are some guides for you:
    http://www.dvdplusvideo.com/BBMayo_Guides.html

I see that SuckRaven gave you the final released version of DVDShrink. Now use that and DVDFab HD Decrypter and follow the guide to use DVDFab HD Decrypter and Shrink and you'll be fine! here is where you can get DVDFab HD Decrypter: http://www.dvdfab.com/free.htm
this decrypter is used to rip the DVD to the hard drive... once there you use DVDShrink to backup make the DVD fit to a DVD5 (single sided blank DVD) and then you're ready to burn using ImageBurn, found here:
    http://www.imgburn.com/

now you're ready to go..... free programs.... guides and download sites so you can install the free programs. enjoy! this is only one way to copy and burn..... there are some many other ways...... after you become experienced try the other ways and see which ones you like. Here some of my programs that I use:

ok guys...I got one of the issues solved today morning.

Before I was thinking that all the dvd ripping is done by a single software ...but after reading your replies, I decided to do some research on this site & found out that backing up a dvd to another dvd needs more than one software & this was the main problem that kept confusing me(correctly said by Ihoe :))
After understanding this I got a clear picture of the whole process of dvd ripping & got a software installed on my comp called as (DVD fab Hd decrypter) & guess what this software was able to save the DVD to my hard disk...Viola!!! ..but the fun was not long lasting as I found out that the saved video on my HD has to much of lagging :( . The DVD fab software actually decrypted the whole dual layer dvd in about 10 to 15 mins to my hard disk...but the lagging of video is a new problem now..any solution to this.

By the way you guys r really helpful :) & this site is one of the best i have come across ...I really appreciate all. Couple of days ago everthing looked complicated to me & after ur support & guidance i have started understanding it..& I am loving it:):)cheers!

I got the solution for the dvdshrink not working problem lol!..as in my post above.
I din know that the whole process of copying a dvd to another dvd needs more than a single software & tht is why when I inserted the dvd in my dvd burner the dvdshrink software din work (as i din know about dvd decrypting software)....now I understand that the dvd first needs to be decrypted to the HD & then dvdshrink is used to reduce the size of the matter inside or alter it.

I am sure dvdshrink will work for me as it was my mis-understanding in using the software last time.

thank you for lending me a helping hand SuckRaven :)
