I was wondering because i have a few things that (images of games) that i would like to keep on my computer but make it so they don't take up as much space (just uncompress them when i need them).
I have WinRAR and like it but, is there anything that does a better compression ratio? It doesn't matter if i have to buy it.

Trying to compress graphics is time loss my friend ! There is next to nothing to compress in a graphic file.

Now changing the format will do a difference. Going from BMP to JPEG will cut size by 10 -- What extension are those you have ! Dont forget with graphics what you downgrade , YOU will never get it back.

Just for fun -- winrar that jpeg you have for signature -- you'll see it has increased in size ! From 16,074 bytes --> it went up to 16,112 bytes.

One way of optimizing your PC --storage wise -- is to convert your HD to NTFS -- this way you gonna get less slack the clusters being much smaller then a Fat32 !

Eeeeeps !! Laughing -- completely misunderstood your post !

    Ok
There are many Compression Tools-- and test on large files have shown that Winrar will compress [bold] some files[/bold] as much as 10 % more then any other Compressing Tool.

You can have a look here at the MOST often used ones ! and pick your choice.

    http://www.softlandmark.com/Zip.htm

**PentaZip 5.1 is a large program that has many refinements not many people need -- we do use it at our Labs.

However at Home, I personnaly prefer Winrar for it's user-friendly interface and efficiency in compressing.

~~Goes hides in the corner , for having misread your original post !! ~~smiles.

Its ok that you misunderstood my original post, i should have been clearer as to what i want to compress.
So far, it looks like with a result of
    [bold]547 MB (574,016,947 bytes) in 1hr 45 minutes 30 seconds.[/bold]
the [bold].7z[/bold] compression method (PowerArchiver 2004) is the best (for amount of compression, if speed is not a factor)
EDIT: I am trying almost every "editors pick" product that was on that page jeanc1 posted, i will update as i go along. EDIT (10/20/04) I am also trying every compression tool posted here that was not posted in jeanc1's post:
    http://www.winmatrix.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=1401

    So far i have tried:
PentaZip, compressing The Sims Unleashed CD 1.img
    compression set to '9' Maximum.
    Original File Size:
    752 MB (788,886,672 bytes)
    Compressed to a .zip file
    594 MB (623,718,184 bytes)
    .bh file
    594 MB (623,465,076 bytes)
    .lha (LHa) file
    611 MB (641,517,455 bytes) in 22 min, 47.21 sec
    .tar file
752 MB (788,887,552 bytes) lol it increased in size, 1 min, 31.97 sec
    .gz (GZip)
    594 MB (622,979,733 bytes) in 18 min, 14.01 sec.
    .tgz (Tar-GZip)
    594 MB (623,007,329 bytes) in 1 min, 9.34 sec.
    .jar (JAR)
    594 MB (622,979,859 bytes) in 18 min, 39.97 sec.
    .bz2 (BZip2)
    591 MB (620,006,911 bytes) in 45 min, 24.15 sec.

    WinRAR 3.40 to a .RAR
    Compression Setting "Best"
555 MB (582,637,083 bytes) in about an hour

StuffIt (Deluxe Version 8.0.1.175, engine version 7.0.1.42)
.sitx format, compression set to "Method 2 - Best Binary Compression, compression level 5 memory 24."
    580 MB (608,442,316 bytes) in 1hr. 45 minutes

    PowerArchiver 2004:
In .zip mode (I assume it is because of the .zip compression works)
    594 MB (623,718,116 bytes)
    In .7z
    547 MB (574,016,947 bytes) in 1hr 45 minutes 30 seconds.

    Winace 2.6 Beta 1
    566 MB (594,256,714 bytes)
in .ace format, compression set to "Maximum" in 1 hr 26 minutes 2 sec.

    WinZip 9.0 SR-1
    In "Maximum (Portable)" Compression
594 MB (622,980,976 bytes) in about 30 minutes

    ALZip 5.5
    594 MB (623,197,948 bytes)
This is all done on the computer in my sig, with the compressing apps set to "Normal" priority.
Also, i have eMule Plus 1o, Protowall, also both MSN and Yahoo messengers running in the background (all on "Normal" priority)

Real interesting test you doing my friend !! Let us know what your final results are ! Which one gives you the best compression given you are using the exact same file and the max settings in each application to do the task. Time can vary depending on Processing power one has !

I couldn't help myself from seeing your thread about compression programs because I am in the process of writing my own. Hope fully it will revolutionize computers because of the suposably impossible compression algorithm in it. No data loss at all, can compress anything, and it will hopefully be for sell by January 2005. Well my point is to see how many people say it is impossible and I have been looking for chat rooms, boards, and realy anything else for compression and I have figured out, no one cares. Well anyway if you want a great compression program, remember Formula 99. If you have any questions just post back and I will check back.

    Peace,
    King Vodious

@Vodious, you'll have to let me know when you get that ready for testing or something as i would be more then glad too help you with it.

I decided to resurrect my post and, if any (most likely all) of these programs where updated, i am going to redo the test but, this time, i am going to be compressing my .mp3 collection, as its getting bigger and bigger, it needs to be controlled (!).

    So.....
here it goes, i'll update this post as i go threw the test.

    I am compressing
Metallica - Live in Ludwigshafen which is a two cd archive of 21 songs, totalling
118 MB (124,532,736 bytes) in size.

When i compressed it with WinAce v2.5 to a .ace file (Compression level set to "Maximum")
    173 MB (182,371,623 bytes)

    WinRAR 3.41 .rar, compression "Best"
    119 MB (125,335,393 bytes)

    PowerArchiver 2004 9.10.06 to a .7z file
    (Compression set to "Ultra")
    118 MB (123,754,636 bytes)

You really should have a look at http://www.maximumcompression.com/

Almost every program is better then WinZip, I think you should have a look at WinRK and UHarc 0.6.

WOW!!! I did'nt know that already... and It's not like I have'nt ever been to that site! I know nothing about compression.... It's not like I have spent 2 years on this one algorithem or anything... Look I am sorry for being well excentric but I know all these programs like the back of my hand. They don't consern me anymore. I am above them. Beyond them. I made it.. the... it is "The algorithem." And I also just made a reference to the men in black.

To pop smith... my advice is to use 7zip.. but music is something that compression algorithems hate.. exept for mine lol.
