I'm trying to buy a HDTV. So I went looking and I found a few but i'm lost when it comes to contrast ratio. What is the best contrast ratio. The higher the better or what? What is the highest? What is average?

I'd say buy anything with a contrast of at least 3000:1 and up. Most of the good LCD's these days have at least a 8000:1 contrast ratio. You will want to find one with a good dynamic contrast ratio as well.

Here, read up on some info from wiki. This will give you a better understanding of the two.
