that really isn't out of line for your current setup using 3 passes especially if it is full disc.

here's a 7.35gb folder I encoded with RB Pro/CCE SP 3 passes. I also selected create an iso and burn automatically so you can subtract another 8 minutes for burn time. 64 minutes to rebuild, encode, and create the iso ain't too shabby.

well when i upgrade to an AMD Athlon 64 x2 6000+ and 2 gig of corsair dominator ram would my times be the same or close to what you are getting?

your times will improve dramatically if you move up to a 3.0ghz X2 AMD CPU. they will not however be as fast as mine. clock per clock intel C2D's will outperform anything AMD has and also my E6600 C2D is OC'ed to 3.6ghz.

like I said though, you will see a significant improvement in your times moving from an AMD single core 2.0ghz cpu to an AMD dual core 3.0ghz cpu but they still won't be as good as if you were using a C2D with the equil clock speed.

how much was your processor and how hard was it to overclock to 3.6ghz and keep it stable? Do you use stock cooling, upgraded fan, or water cooling?

I paid $311 for my cpu. I am using a zalman CNPS9500LED hsf. 3.6ghz is as high as I recommend on air. it's at it's limits. I know of some going as high as 3.9ghz with water. keep in mind a big part of being able to OC a cpu also depends on the mobo and ram.

    @mimesis

If you are on a tight budget, you can get the E6400 for $20 or so cheaper than what you are going to shell out for the AMD... I have my E6400 oc'ed to 3.2GHz on air. Overclocking to 3.2 GHz can be done very easily with minimal changes to voltages, etc. This was my very first build, so, that oughta say something about the simplicity of stably overclocking the Core2Duo's. Just "google" to get some baseline settings... See my sig for other components...

the E6420 is starting to become available. it has the same clock speed as the E6400 except it has 4mb cache as opposed to 2mb cache. they're both about the same price. very good cpu for someone on a budget. OC it to 3.0ghz or 3.2ghz and it will easily outperform the AMD X2 6000+ and for less money.

    Just a small note:

The physical size of DVD does not necessarily have any bearings on the time it takes to encode it. A 7.6 gigabyte movie can take less time than a 6.6 Gigabyte movie. The reason is that there are other variables that affect the total encode time assuming the same RB and encoder settings. Many DVD's have multiple sound tracks that increase the size of a ripped DVD and sound has little affect on encode times. A 6.6 Gigabyte movie might actually contain more video content than a 7.6 Gigabyte movie because it is the total number frames that has the greatest affect on a given rigs encode speeds. So to make comparisons one would have to be encoding the exact same movie using the exact same settings and encoder.

At this time the fastest encoding systems are those that are Intel Conroe based. They will encode about 30% faster than the fastest AMD based Dual core.

I finally have my new PC up and running...

Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 Energy Efficient 95W edition (G0 Stepping)

    MSI P35 Platinum Socket Motherboard

    Zalman CNPS9700 LED Cooler

    4GB Crucial Ballistix Memory DDR2 PC2-8500 5-5-5-15 Unbuffered NON-ECC DDR2-1066MHz

4x 500GB Western Digital WD5000AAKS disks (though only have one setup so far), 31C at idle, 44C max while using Rebuilder!

No overclocking as yet, it's just purring along on default settings (and completely silently), it's not too shabby at all, just did movie only mode of Pirates of the Caribbean World's End....

Nice system. There are a couple of variables that would be helpful if you could run them.

The selected movie and ones choices makes an enormous difference in the outcome such as removing the extras and unwanted sound tracks.

If possible could you encode Lord of The Rings II using two pass?

A couple of minor concerns: Check your hard disk for DMA settings?

Your prepare time of 5 minutes is a little long and should be 3 minutes tops and 2 minutes is better. Also the rebuild of 22 minutes is quite long, it should be around 11 to 12 minutes. If you have it set to two pass then your encode speeds are good. The other two areas (prepare and rebuild) are often reflective of a slow down with your hard drive.

Again nice system, I've been dying to do a new build for some time but my other hobbies keep chewing up my dollars. I envy every new build I hear about and thus I am forced to live vicariously through others.

God i can't wait for all of my hardware to finally arrive. My computer has slowly but surely is dying. And probably has much to do with burning movies on a bad setup.

However, i just ordered the AMD Athlon 64 X2 6400+ Black Edition (3.2ghz), 2gb Corsair XMS2 ram, ASUS M2N-e SLI motherboard, Seagate 320gb SATA 16mb cache, BFG 8800gt.

What should i get for run times on a 2 pass encode now?

cheers Soph.. i'll try to have a go at LOTR tomorrow night, though i have a huge backlog of movies to attack first :)

Bear in mind i haven't tweaked a thing on this rig yet, just wanted to do a sample DVD-RB run to put it thru it's paces and see how stable it was; as to DMA that'll be as Rebuilder was dragging it's data off a USB2.0 notebook drive, and i was running ConvertXToDVD at the same time, also dragging it's data off the same notebook drive. I do have the default 2passes set in Rebuilder.

I did however run an encode of Transformers afterwards, it's data was already on the SATA c: drive and the figures concur with those in your post -

I have a couple of AMD systems as well and although they won't encode as fast as creaky's Intel processor, they are still impressive rigs. You should see some pretty decent encode speeds. In the prepare and rebuild phases I've found that AMD processors tend to be a bit faster no doubt because of their superior memory handling and FSB bandwidth. You should see about 2 minutes on prepare and about 9 to 12 minutes on rebuild. On encode an core 2 processors is going to win by about 15 to 20 minutes or more. Still you will get some impressive encode speeds because that is still a very fine processor. I would be interested in seeing the results of it running LOR II as well. I seen a lot of results running that DVD and there is damn little to remove so everyone starts on the same foot.

    Good luck with the build.
