But is it not possible that I may have "disabled a necessary service? And that it can't turn back on?

    If so which one?

    Thanks :)

Sorry, please could you explain in slightly more detail? I understand Device Manager - but what "controller". I don't have one called Adaptec - which device am I supposed to look in?

I guess its possible but you would know it. There is only 2 ways to disable services and you would know you are doing it and would need to know what you are doing when doing it. The first is the System Configuration Utility. The Services tab shows you the services.
And the second is Open Control Panel/Administrative ToolsServices or else select Start/Run, type services.msc

But again you need to know what services are and what you are doing when messing with them.

The controler that is operating with the driver. Should be scsi or raid.

Again with this being a dell you may need to contact them or have someone you know that knows computer hardware to take a look at it.

    Thanks again:

    1) I have turned off various services - all very consciously and carefully, though I don't remember now. What I want to know is what is the name of the service that would be relevant to this driver?

    2) There is no reference to RAID or SCSI in Device Manager.

I really don't understand what this driver does or how to update it - although Nero seems to want it and be unable to recognise it.

What can be the solution? I'm sure it's obvious to someone here. :)

Thanks so much for all your patience so far.
