Where Does One Start to Write Subtitles

    I have some Japanese VHS tapes and have no problem in digitizing them and creating DVDs. But, the next step is to add English subtitles, which I don't have the foggiest where to start. Can someone point me to where I can find information, software, etc. to accomplish this task or point me to the forum location where I should post my query? Thank you in advance
