since you told me you worked at Circuit City, and all your co-workers advised you on what to do, i naturally assumed you knew what AVR stands for........

i looked your AVR up and all i see itc capable of doing is upconverting the video signal slightly..
but to take full advantage of that, your TV needs to have component connections as well....... (thats the red, blue, and green jacks)
thats the best set up you can have with that receiver acting as the middle man... below that in quality, you have left, s-video (the multi-pin looking port, kinda like a mouse connection for pc), then just plain composite (the yellow jack).
but from your above post, all you have is a composite connection to your tv, so............. your S.O.L. there...
your better off getting a newer tv that supports either HDMI, DVI, COMPONENT, or s-video (or all of the above)

yea i plan on getting a phat phat phat tv in the near future, and take my old tv upstairs. when i do that i'm not even gonna care about advanced connections to it and literaly pay all my attention on the connections downstairs, audio is all going to be with the three digital inputs on the far left side, and video, i'm not going to relay thru the reciever, i'm going to go straight from my componets, with my game systems, i'm already familiar with the best connections they offer, but as for my dvd player and cable box i'm not sure, i'll probably have to get a better dvd player because i think the best output connection it offers is componet cables. and my cable box may or may not be the hd version which i will upgrade to if necessary. but since i'm willing to get all new componets, which connections should i look for? or better yet, since you said you belong to a bunch of home audio forums and magazines and stuff like that, is there a site you would recommend that has information on the different types of connections and why one is better than the other?

all you can do is read.. they just give opinions and what they have and what they like/dislike..
    same as here..

as far as connections wise... (options)
it all depends on your budget.
more and more tv's are coming standard with HDMI sockets already
below that is DVI and component, there are more... but i dont care for them...
