I need to replace my dvd rom drive, can anyone give me some advice what to buy. I burn alot of dvds with dycrpter and shrink it seems that the read time is long. Is their a difference in dvd roms that will read faster than others?

yeh just read speed. not my burner, I'm happy with the speed of it. I was just curious if I go with a faster read speed on my rom drive if it causes read errors when backing up dvds. Like I said I use dycrypter, shrink occasionally dvd cloner II, is their a limit on how fast the dvd can be read.

I'm not sure, my computer is a dell it came with a samsung dvd rom sd616. It is only 3 years old, when I called dell and told them the problems I was having with it they said I need to replace it. As far as I'm concerned samsung stinks. can you recommend one that is good and will last more than 3 years. My Burner I installed is a TDK 440N do I need to worry about compatability my operating system is windows xp home ed. We have our computer routed to our sterio receiver and TV, so our dvd rom is frequently used!

Like Nephilim suggests, I also recommend Lite-On models and the Sony DDU1613 is a good dvd-rom at $25.50 from newegg.com. Just be sure it reads all formats. I replaced my old NEC because it could not read a dvd+/-rw. So, I have 2 Sony's and 2 Lite-On's now and they both are sweet. Good Luck and keep us posted on your purchase.

Pioneer makes an outstanding slot loading ROM - it's the model 116 I believe. I've owned two and they were great :)

I have to use magnifying glasses along with my contacts nowadays to see up close. Without the contacts I can see great close up. Now I look as old as I feel. :)
