I have been using nero vision express to burn my dvd movies, and sometimes they have the long blake line across the top and one at the bottom. Even when i put it on 16.9 on the telly it does not always make full use of the telly and the picture is not full so i still have the two black borders. There are 3 opyions in nero, 16.9 14.3 and automatic. I normally leave it on automatic, does anybody think i should leace it on 16.9, or is there another explanation for not having a full screen. any help appreciated.

It is what it is. You have a widescreen movie, NVE cannot change this.

Do you have a 4:3 TV?

Thanks mate for the reply. I have widescreen tv with different options, eg 16.9, 4.3 etc. the 16.9 with zoom gets rid of most of the borders but a little is left.

One thing to remember the 16:9 format is designed for HDTV, not DVDs. The AR is actually 1.78:1 and unfortunately no DVD films use that AR, usually it's somewhere between 1.85:1 (not too common these days) and about 2.40:1. This basically means to watch DVD films on a 16:9 set some trade-offs will be involved, i.e. bars of various sizes or some zooming/adjusting.

I understand the formats better now you have explained. At least i know now why the bars are there.
Thanks for your reply, much appreciated.

It is an odd situation. In years past many movies were 1.85:1 which is a pretty good fit for 16:9 sets. It's also intersesting to note that many of these 185:1 movies, Lethal Weapon comes to mind were actually shot fullscreen and then 'masked' (effectively cutting off parts of the top and bottom) when projected in theaters to 1.85:1 widescreen.

With the mega capacity of Blue Ray they could easily have the original plus a 16:9 reformatted version of the movie on the disc for folks to choose from. It will never happen though.
