ddlooping is no "S-Y-K-E-S, he's a very well informed and intelligent person, and when he's at his best, quite interesting. I think that he under appreciated our crew while over appreciating himself. I happen to learn a lot, just lurking... After having to leave my 'puter for a couple of days - I'm still commuting between my old home in NC and my new one in SC - it was just quite an experience to read all the posts of the weekend bunched together... Actually, I'm not finished reading all of them.

 

No problem bigo, I think that you're justifiably miffed, you were condescended too by someone who dosen't really know who you are. Some things said were mean and unfair. But there's also a quality to ddloopings thinking. When he's busy focusing on what he's doing and not what we were or are doing, his thoughts are organized. He's very task oriented. ddlooping is new here and he assumed too much authority when he first joined us but he's also the kind of fresh blood that AD needs. We weren't plugged into the beta testing of DVD Shrink but he was, and he's plugged into to all the news about it, and so will we be if we include him in our little experiment.

I'm about to shake the apple cart here and get everybody after a new bear rug. DVDCopy2 can be a poor choice for video recording. Don't everyone rush me at once and I'll explain.

Recording a lot of recent acquisitions, I had excellent success with DVDCopy2. With LOTR, ROTK I couldn't ask for better results and it was a hands down winner over the other programs I tested; Recode2, DVDShrink, and DVD2One, and DVDXCopy.

However, I have found that for older movies Copy2 is a poor choice. The fact that Copy2 enhances the cinematography is its downfall. Not only does it enhance a good quality movie, it enhances the faults inherent in older movies. The older movies have poorer digital quality and in some cases are no more than digitized copies of the original film. It is those poorer quality images that get enhanced and end up looking worse.

Legend of the Lost (Sophia Loren and John Wayne) is a case study. With Copy2 faults were enhanced and the movie didn't look good at all. Looked like pumping and film flaws enhanced. With Recode2, the flaws were much less evident and the picture was actually a pleasure to watch. So in this case the so called lesser quality Recode2 and Shrink turn out to be a better choice. Didn't keep XCopy in the mix so can't judge it on this film. Though it has done good with other older movies.

Through experience with various software programs, one starts to learn their weaknesses and strengths. It comes back to something I said before. Proper use of a program for the job it does best. Sort of an apples and oranges situation when you use Copy2 for an old movie as opposed to a new high quality disc.

Now that its explained, I don't think anyone can get too hot. The results I state are easily verifiable by anyone who wishes to make a similar comparison.

Sophocles, I never not wanted dd here, he IS a member, so he's been around a while. No doubt he knows his sheeat.

DDlooping, just thought of something in Pinnacle's IC8. Some are having problems with it's finished size being too small, I believe you mentioned this.

You can correct this by: just before your last step to analyze, burn, etc. grab the slider on compression, move it til your line turns red, then back off a couple of points. This will give you a larger file on your disc and still not exceed the 4.37 limit.

You can also change compression individually, but I seem to remember you want movie only so that would be irrelevant to you.

I'm a CCE addict I do it all the slow way but my wife wants me to make her a backups every now (she has her own DVD budget) and then so I use DVDcopy2. Quick and painless and almost always satisfies. You know that software they sell here on AD, Movie Collector? Bought it. Now ask me if I need it?

I have bought VHS of old movies cos they're not on DVD, and converted them to DVD. The quality actually seemed better but still, a lot worse than what we're use to. So I know all about that path. Been there done that, as they say. Still, it's nice to be able to have it on DVD, when it's not offered anywhere.

 

I don't think I'll go there bigO, I'll tell that story over a good mug at the tavern.
