Sophocles, have you looked at the WinDVD Creator? I'd like your opinion on that editing tool if you are familiar with it.

I've noticed that certain programs fit a certain niche. You have your freeware warriors. Then you have the Newbies, middle of the roaders and the techies. All have their needs and develop favorites within skill levels. So the gamut runs from DVD Shrink to CCE. Some people progress through all the stages and end up with a lot of choices.

To me the DVDCopy2 has no peer yet as the simple but powerful transcoder. For the other recordings that aren't appropriate, I use Recode2. I hear IC8 is very good but have no experience with it.

DVD Shrink would be my option if I didn't have the retail items. From that I would end up with Recode2 because Shrink works best with Nero and the Recode2 isn't that much more.

CCE is without much competition as the high end program. I have my programs and intend to get started with that shortly.

So, there are a number of 'best' according to need, usage and preference. But, there are standouts which most people can agree on. The big problem is that most people are not going to invest in several retail products on a quest to find the best. Luckily, there are some trials for those who want to try and not have to purchase.

I'm starting to think about suggesting beginners start with DVD Shrink and the trial Nero. That way they can get a little experience and have time to use some of the various trial software and freeware. In that manner, they can make a more informed choice of the software they want to keep or purchase for the long haul.

brobear, if you're going to recommend the trial Nero to newbies, I suggest you take a look at this thread, answered by Mr. nero (or at least one of 'em) himself concerning nero trial and ultra 6 and new additons to nero.

Example of what I was talking about, your post to AL-FAMOUS, recode not included in the trial version, nope,it is. Also, you can keep reloading trial version every month for as long as you want. Lasts for that month no matter when you D-load it.

I would think that there would be a limit of one trial period that lasts up to 30 days, but apparently not because I read Craigs reply to bigo. With an every 30 day refresh of the trial period some people might not have a reason to pay for it.

Thanks all, I stand corrected. They made some changes recently it seems. When I downloaded the program, I tried to use Recode and the program told me I had to order a plugin. Seems some of our fans started asking them why. Since I own the pack with Recode2, I didn't know when the change occurred.

I saved that little post by Mr Nero to save typing in the future.

If I ever see a man with big red eyes, a pipe, and Sherlock Holmes hat, I'll have to ask him if his name is Sophocles. Is it Thai or Cambodian sauce they won't allow the tourists to have. Wonder what's in that stuff.

Hope you informed AlFamous of the change.

Guess not as I just posted the data for him.

Brobear, Note Mr. Nero(craig) said there have been other problems with recode on the update similar to mine. If I were you I would hold off until the next update which should be soon, according to him.

Ya think it's thai or cambodian(sauce that is) in that pipe? hmm...

Damn ... you guys start talkin' hot sauce, and I start hummin' the old Johnny Cash tune "Burnin' Ring of Fire." Even the thought of Tabasco breaks a sweat on my face.

I'm up & running with RMP & RB/CCE. It feels great, and looks even better. I owe a lot of thanks to folks like vurbal, Sophocles, big-O (and the list goes on) for the help and encouragement.

Since this thread was about trascoders, I'll weigh in. I was mostly partial to DVD2One (over Shrink) in the past. Now that I've seen CCE quality, I want more. Big-O put me onto IC8, but for the time it takes, I might as well do CCE. 'Seems I've heard similar sentiments already. At this point I am going to try DVDCopy2. While there is only one version available for trial, I am wondering, though, if there is any benefit to the Platinum version, and if it really is 25% faster?

Thanks ... I have been waiting!!! Is the new Shrink going to have a price tag, or is it still going to be freeware?

doc, I just did Zorro(2hrs and 30 minutes) with IC 8 and it took 90 minutes exactly. Results-perfect. If you're doing RB/CCE in that amt. of time, can I have your recipe?

Well ... I thought something was wrong. Over several tries I consistently came in at about 2-1/2 hrs. The other thing is that installing it knocked out my Nero, and so I had to re-install it after removing IC8. I think it is a Karma thing between me and Pinnacle. I've never had much luck with their products.

I may give it another free trial yet, if it will let me.

v3.2 was going to be released at the week-end, but dvdshrink decided to try and improve the compression algorithm even more.
ETA is now sometime next week.

Doc409 , bigorange, would you be willing to beta-test DVD Shrink v3.2?
All that'd be ask of you is to give it a thorough workout and report your findings.
