You should have been around in early June when this thread first started, or just go back and read some of the early posts. The "Shrinkites" are already here and have been for some time. You've been shielded from it because they don't know enough to argue it over CCE.

    Sophocles, Amen to that brother!

At least when we agree to disagree about the merits of an application we have tried it and used it and have actually seen results without taking somebody's word as gospel.

Reminds me of lemmings in a mindless dash towards the cliff's precipise...

Am I to understand that the DVD Burner itself does NOT play a role in quality?

I have the Sony DRU 700A (I think that's the model #). Is this an inferior burner to something else?

Sophocles ... I have come across some of that, but I thought that it had died down. I should probably brace myself for another attack...and try not to get sucked in.

Hi Big-O. I was hoping you'd get caught up and join this thread. I like your lemmings analogy. This Shrinkmania thing does seem a little mindless to me. Hype upon hype.

    Hi Dr_John...
There's actually an AD forum where you could get a wealth of info on your drive. It is DVD+/-R Drives under the PC Hardware orange bar on the Forum's front page.

    Dr_John...

I should have added that I don't know much about your drive. Sony does make a good product, and if all your software is installed correctly, it should work fine for you. The actual quality of the backup is a function of the transcoder software used. Be sure to check into any firmware updates, though. This link will take you directly to the 700A page. http://sony.storagesupport.com/dvdrw/dru700adwn.htm

I should also mention that I am experiencing a time-lag with posting today, and it may have looked like I was ignoring your question. 'Sorry about that.

    hello partners! what's up Nephilim?

here is a hard one for you guys...

A guy running XP HOME EDITION burns movies in about 15 to 19 min using shrink and Decrypter.
The same guy decided to upgrade to XP Professional and now the movies take TWO HOURS to burn
    WHAT WENT WRONG?

Even the TECHS at BestBuy couldn't figure it out?

One more thing! the CPU that before was working at top speed during burns, it's now showing 15 % usage only!

    strange ah?

    no other aplications are running!

He probably needs to reset his DMA settings in device manager. Go to device manager and look for IDE/Atapi channels,go to the primary and secondary channels and right click on them, then to avanced settings. Another strong possibility, he needs to reinstall ASPI drivers. I'm betting that it's his DMA settings that is causing the problem.

    Flanker,
If you have Nero installed, go to InfoTools. If not, dl it from here. http://www.nero.com/en/631940826989307.html .
Under ASPI you should have an "installed properly" green bar for system ASPI, and one for Nero (if it is installed). Under Configuration all your drives should show DMA on. Also, make sure your HD is defragged.

I read the review. What I stopped on is the off the subject jab at CCE. He said procoder2 was extremely better than CCE. Although he did qualify it with interlaced.
Of course no proof was offered.
I have DVDshrink 3.2 but primarily for utilitarian purposes. CCE is used on everything to be compressed.

It'll be a while before I run any big tests on new Shrink.

    64026402...

Yeah, I paused when I read the precoder2 comment. I was wondering if I had missed something? But since I haven't used it, I don't really know what he ws talking about.

As far as it being awhile before you plan to use Shrink 3.2 for any big tests, it would be appreciated if you would consider taking up the "Shrink Challenge?"

Having not used Procoder before I can't say for sure what it is or isn't good for, but it does have a loyal following, if a significantly smaller one than CCE. I've seen very knowledgable people say that Procoder is better for interlaced material, and also some that say it's much better for low bitrates, but as I said I can't personally veryify any claims. Given Canopus' reputation for making high quality encoder boards I wouldn't be at all surprised to find that those claims were true, but then again given the wide range of options within CCE it's also possible that it's a question of getting everything just right for interlaced or low bitrate material. I've also seen people recommend using different Quantization matrices for CCE (only available in SP) to get better quality at low bitrates, but my own tests have shown that not to be true, so I take everything, even from experts, with a grain of salt.
