Which Transcoding Tools Produce The Best Picture Quality.

    That's ok. If Sophocles and bigorange can do one movie each that will make for three tests.

    Challenge sounds more exciting and more data is pointless because DVD Shrink is finished. I did a back up last night with DVD2DVD-R to prove I was right about the under sizing problem and frame rate variance. The damn thing came in at a perfect 4.37 gigs and the frames were 29.97 and the results were excellent so I stand to be corrected on that point. It did however give me an idea because DVD2DVD-R makes an OK diagnostic prog as well.

    Using DVD2DVD-R I opened VtS_01 (shrink)it had a Nom. bit rate of 7500000 bit/s and VTS_o2 (CCE) 9800000 bit/s. I'm no expert on this but that is a significant difference and I believe the higher number usually means a better picture but I will defer to someone more knowledgeable in this area. I then loaded the file again and played them but instead of looking for the artifacts I decided to look for detail.

    In regards to detail CCE walked all over DVD Shrink, go check it for yourself, but instead of being focused on his nose look at the wrinkles under his eyes. With Shrink they are blurred and the details is not there but with CCE the details is exceptional. I would like everyone else who downloaded the clips to make the same comparison. Its like I said in my earlier post less detail hides some minor artifacts to the detriment of detail.

    brobear...Thanks for the advice. You said: "Sometimes you have to play a video in the player to get AnyDVD to recognize it."

    Video? Is that the technical term for the disc with the movie on it. Say I wanted to make a back up copy of my 'Reservoir Dogs' movie on disk. If I have problems with AnyDVD I just play a bit of the movie on my computer to help kickstart AnyDVD to do its thing?

    To make AnyDVD work with DVDcopy2 you have to click on the AnyDVD icon in your tray and then go to programs, look below under settingsand you will see safe mode, uncheck it. Now it should work.

    P.S: are you comparing paused-frames or viewing the clips while they're being played?

    sophocles...thanks for advice. During my travels I had seen postings by you (and others) about unchecking anydvd's 'safe mode" and would have done it anyway but, from memory, the program installed with that function 'unchecked' (even tho it is enabled when the 'default' button is pressed).

    I take it then that "Video" is the technical term for the disc with the movie on it?

    Hope to burn my first do-it-on-my-own movie tonight, time permitting.

    Eother video or movie seems to work. I think I see movie more often. Video can also mean a video stream from other sources like a DV camcorder, etc.

    No I'm still looking for something special. I won't be getting started until tomorrow because I'm a little exhausted from work but by Saturday or Sunday I should have something available. So far I've been comparing DVD2DVDR to RB/CCE to find if there are differences.

    You know that to be fair you'll have to provide at least one example of RB/CCE from your tests?

    Did you find any differences between DVD2DVD-R output and DVD RB one?
    Please say no, so I won't have to do the same test with DVD RB. :D
    In any case, I'd like to view others tests for once. ;)

    Where your previous comparisons done on still-frames?

    I prefer not to use still frames so all of my comparisons are done with motion. I also don't like short clips because they too can vary so I use at least 30 seconds or more.

    I hope you won't make compilations of 30 second clips for your test.
    This would make for very long download times for those who'd be interested in viewing them. :/

    It's not surprising, you were actually comparing DVD2DVD-R to v3.2 beta 3. :D

    Well, last night I successfully burned my first movie and no coasters (he said proudly). I was happy enough with the results to purchase DVDCopy2 and AnyDVD.

    I burned twice using the basic settings; once to DVD and then to VCD (2 x CDs) for the sake of practice and comparison. The difference in the quality betwwen DVD and CD was noticeable. I'll be burning to DVD's I think.

    Next time I'll play around with the options etc and fine tune a burn. I'm happy. Thanks for getting me thus far.

    Slightly unrelated Question 1: Is DVD X Rescue a good (enough) product to buy? Or is there something better or is it that none of these magic cures really work in the real world?

    sophocles...yeah, found out the company had problems when I 'googled' last nite to find out some more about 'dvd x rescue'. The program caught my eye yesterday in a local store which has 'dvd x rescue' boxed on the shelves as a separate product and on sale (marked down from AUD$100).

    From a posting I read somewhere on AfterDawn.com I thought one of you guys (maybe brobear?) had 'dvd x platinum' which includes 'dvd x rescue' and may have used the 'rescue' function on a damaged cd/dvd.

    I've googled further today and found there are 'market' sites you can get 'dvd x rescue' for about AUD$20 (!).

    Was trying to find out if the program was any good notwithstanding the company has sunk.
