Luckily I have been able to backup all of the invisible defect movies so far with some additional time and effort.

soph, I am pretty sure this was an intentional read error to prevent ripping, not just a bad press.

6402.... My drive read is HL-DT-STRW/DVD GCC-4480B, and to tell the truth It's been so far back I don't remember the specifics. I actually went and got another copy at a different place after getting a refund on my first one. I believe I did save the file from the 1st one to send to mackem x as he wanted to look at it.

For what it's worth, I've backed up and edited with Remake all three of these (Butterfly, Ned Kelly, and K-19) without incident.

I am trying to back up War & Peace right now. I hit a defect at the same place everytime. Nothing I can do, including a 1x rip, works.

I am wondering if there is some program out there which could "interpolate" data on a movie disc?

I would be interested in know if others have the same difficulty with War And Peace that you're having. If anyone out there reads this and have tried to back up war and peace could you tell us about it?

Are there different versions of War and Peace?

I believe there is only one version of the 1956 movie starring Henry Fonda and Audry Hepburn. It is a single disc, and the error was in the 05 sector. I did skip it, and all the others were OK.

Well, maybe there is a "test marketing" program going on now with the new movies to see how we all react to a physical form of copy protection? I am more inclind to think it is a defective pressing. Realising movie DVD's use a mechanical process, and die erosion, inclusions/impurities in the tool steel, and other defects are inevitable, I am surprised we don't see a lot more of this kind of problem.

We probably do see more errors but we're unaffected by them.

Just FYI. My personal copy of Ned Kelly has the error and so did two copies I checked out from Blockbuster -- all the exact same sector, and all play fine on a standalone.

All the more reason for my stubborn side to give it a try, besides I've already ordered the movie. I'll let you know how it worked out when I get it.

Is anyone trying the new Anydvd beta for this problem. So far I have been getting good results when the problem arises. It is the 4.0.3.2 beta. You do need to check the box to remove the bad sector copyright protection.
It is suppose to be checked by default but it wasn't on mine.

Anydvd also mentions transfering files directly to the hard drive first if you have problems.

I have it installed but I've not been in a position to determine its benefits. Truth is if it weren't for the posts in our threads, I'd never know there was a problem with RB/CCE at all.

Bigorange. Have you tried a 1x read on your burner?

    Sophocles,
No problems were indicated with DVDrebuilder. Just the rip.
Since you don't have a disc with the error to test I figure you'll wait for Ned Kelly.

I was hoping that Doc and Bigorange and jdobbs would test it out on their problem DVDs.

When I get Ned Kelly I'll certainly give it a go.

6402....as will i, and I have also DL'd anydvd beta.

Doc, I do not think this is a production error but an intentional procedure. Too many people complaining of it. Besides which 6402...used anydvd to get around it, which is what it's purpose is.

It would be a coincindence to big in my mind that they would have a production error that just "happens" to prevent DVD backup.

It's an old trick. They've used it on floppy discs, then on CD-ROMs, on Playstation CDs -- so why would DVDs be any different? The funny part is that it is ridiculously easy to get defeat... silly rabbits -- tricks are for kids!
