Hello Oriphus, I came across your thread which I found interesting especially as it seemed like another Brit bashing exercise. I thought I would make a few points, not in an emotionally negative sort of way or to try to rubbish you or your views which is healthy in a democracy.

We, like most nations, bathe in the glory of national achievement. It gives the country a boost and an albeit temporary feel good factor. You shouldn’t confuse the jingoistic tabloid/gutter press headlines with what the majority of individuals actually feel which is a sense of national pride. Goodness knows that doesn’t happen very often.

Arrogance is a bit strong. I assume that you are American so the saying “kettle calling the pot black” springs to mind. I note that you are in Belfast so it is understandable that you would have a certain viewpoint regarding “Brits”.

I am English and try to be objective and reasonable but I know that there are fellow countrymen that behave badly. Every country in the World has them – they embarrass their country when abroad, especially after a drink. This is an area that Britain seems to excel in!

You will notice that I accept there are stupid Brits but the majority are OK as I also acknowledge that not all Americans are big mouthed, racist, power mad, fat bastards that want to invade lesser countries to protect their cheap oil and fatburgers. I detest France for its selfish, self serving attitude but I have generally found the French people I have met, outside of Paris, to be nice and caring and friendly.

On the subject of Johnny Wilkinson, the timing was perfect for him to receive the Sports Personality of the Year award. He was very high profile for the right reasons at the right time. Of course, he was one member of a great team but he is the equivalent of the lead singer in a rock band. (I hope that analogy works!). With regards to him sitting back and counting the pounds, name three big money making TV commercials he has made in his own right. I bet you’re struggling after one. I personally think Martin Johnson should have won the award but I guess that it all depends on what context you use “personality”.

So following the rest of the thread you seem to have a go at “big headed news reporters and sports presentators” and rugger players in general, ah well. If you want a rant, how about President Bush committing NASA to a Mars landing in the future at an estimated cost of $500 Billion (that’s $500,000,000,000). With that you could perhaps set up a National Health Service in America; or buy every Palestinian family a house and a car and a job (perhaps they would then have something to live for); or tackling environmental problems/greenhouse gases. Why not sort out our planet first before we go f*cking up other ones.

Anyway, good to get all that off my chest. Keep up the good work.

Hello SEGABhoy, seems that you have some serious issues that need addressing. What happened in 1966?

Good to see Celtic beating Rangers at the top of the table though. As an Englishman, I can enjoy Celtic v Rangers as football rivalry, not as a battle of the religions. Helps me sleep at night!

P.s. Tomorrow belongs to the worthy...

Anyway that was an Irish Joke not Brittish and I follow Celtic because they aren't racist (to blacks) like rangers are.

This may surprise you but I can go for days on end here in England without hearing heated discussions about the 1966 World Cup! The main discussions/moans about this come from sad people with huge chips on their shoulders. Yes we are proud that we won the World Cup, no we don't go on about it all the time and to be honest I think it is a huge failing on this nation that we haven't at least been in another World Cup final since.

It may also surprise you to know that if Scotland reached the finals of any major tournament I and most people I know would want them to do well (as we would Wales and both Irelands). At the beginning of this thread somebody said something about the reactions of an American and an Englishman to seeing a big Mercedes. The England teams try to beat the best in the World to improve their self esteem whilst the Scots want the World to beat England to improve the Scots self esteem! Wow, heavy eh?

Finally, "now try and make a better effort of being Bush's bitches". You ignorant twat.
When your "country" is totally independent, can support itself without tax subsidies from the despised English, can provide employment and prospects to all its people without them having to come down South to make a future (including your politicians) then you can make stupid remarks like that. If we are anybody's bitches then you are pimps living off the benefits we provide.

I'm glad I got that off my chest and I haven't even mentioned winning the Rugby World Cup yet )

    Have a nice day

It is very true about the racism (sectarianism is a form of racism) that is part and parcel of Rangers F.C. Celtic does not extend that same sort of racism and generally has a more welcoming atmosphere to people of all paths of life.

ilepak i hear what you are saying, and for the most part agree with you. My comments were meant more for sports commentators as similar personalities in the sporting/press world. The general decent English man is not as arrogant or irritating as that. My own nationallity is Irish, born and living in Belfast, though i have a British Passport as well. I really havent got any bad views about the Brits, ones that are Racist anyway. What does irritate me is those that hold on to the past and not letting the rest of the world move forward. Take good old Ian Paisley as mentioned in the joke (which is a good one). He is a bigot, he doesnt want equal opportunities and he openly discredits other national parties working for peace. You would think that Sinn Fein was the only political party that represented the views of a paramiletary organisation. In fact, there are others, on the uniost side, that also represent these types of people. Yeah the term Sinn Fein IRA is always applied by bigots like himself and his false political party. However, that is an opinion held by me and i most also respect the opinions of others.

I know this is getting off topic now, but if you go into the Falls (a nationalist area of Belfast) you will see lots of murals that depict children playing, fields, and other nice things - with the odd scribble IRA somewhere. If you go into the Shankhill (Loyalist Belfast) you will see murals depicting violence and attrocaty. That is what we grow up with here.
    Sorry to go off topic...
