I am in the process of buying an HDTV, but in the mean time I had my local cable company hook up my HDTV converter box so I would be ready to go when I get my new TV. But when I got my new cable box I noticed I could receive the HD channels... Can anyone tell my why I am receiving the HD channels on an old TV that isn't HD capable? Is this normal?? All help is appreciated.

Im guessing that you are connecting to your old TV via coax, svid, or composite. If this is the case its cuz your box is down converting the signal to standard resolutions for you..... much like future converter boxes will do for the people who dont own HDTVs
