    hey guys,

I'm not throwing DVD Decrypter away. Once again all I am saying is that Fab does most things that Decrypter does and compresses the iso file to boot. So it does the job of both Shrink and Decrypter in one neat package. It will also rip a dvd9 to 2 dvd5's if you wish and does Duel Layer.

I love Decrypter and I still use it religously with Shrink. But lets face facts here. Its going to be outdated. What happens with DL copies? And what about DVD HD and Blu-ray? Sayanora, hasta la vista. Hey its like seeing an old friend die a slow death, but its coming. No flowers plz, just send your donations to the best freeware software out there!! Regards...

Ohh... jdobbs, where are you? LOL

I guess Fengtao appreciates the praise. I agreed before, it's all about what a person wants and likes. I just don't see DVDFab as the panacea that the DVDIdle site claims it to be. Also, I'd just do a DL instead of splitting discs. That is more for those who don't have a good encoder or don't have a DL burner. Although, there is a limit to what a good encoder can accomplish; thank goodness the prices are coming down on DL media.

As for the obsolescence of DVD Decrypter, the only thing I can foresee any time soon is the decryption software portion of it will fall behind. I can't see any of the other tasks it performs becoming obsolete any time soon. As for the decryption, I haven't really been using that part of the program for some time. With AnyDVD running, there's no decryption for Decrypter to do. Now you know why I don't have problems with movies like Hitch and others with similar encryption.

You speak of Blue Ray and other new technologies. Well, maybe they will come online to where they will be useful to the average consumer. Unless the equipment industry are fools, which I doubt, they learned a lesson from DL. Though DL has about double the capacity of a DVD5 the cost has made the technology prohibitive so far. Just think of the costs that might be incurred with that newer technology. So, until they get the costs down, I doubt we will see much of the high capacity future tech for some time in mainstream use.

I use Decrypter for all my dual layer copies, it is the best. It handles the layer break beautifully and I have had no problems with playback on any of my standalones. As for blu-ray that is still a long way off, and there is not going to be a mad rush of people wanting to spend money on new equipment. As for DVD Fab I tried the trial version and found it lacking, it overcompresses and the backups seem to come out to dark. DVD Decrypter still puts out, and as stated above using it with AnyDVD you still have a powerful tool. I backed up Hitch, HOFD, and Man of the House all with Decrypter and had no problems.

    Thanks Arniebear,
I nominate you to start the DVD Decrypter refresher class for those who don't realize there is a lot more to DVD Decrypter than just a decryption tool. LOL Looking at it objectively, I'm amazed at all that was packed into the DVDD app, especially with it being freeware. Same goes for Shrink, though I no longer use Shrink very much. One has to respect the abilities of LUK and Dr Shrink.

No doubt about it, DVDD is the best and there wont' be another one like it for some time! I use it all the time! It's one of the only programs that DOESN'T do any changes to the ripped files at all.......when you want the exact DVD files, the same as on the original disk. It's one of the only programs that can assure a TRUE 1:1 copy! Get your DLs out and seeeeeeee!

That just depends... Decrypter can also process DVDs with multiangles and retain only a selected one. Decrypter has a broad variety of abilities, the versatility is one of the main reasons I like it.

IMHO when LUK did the last update he knew that time was growing short for the program and packed as much as possible in it. He made a program that integrates well with AnyDVD and this is what will sustain it. Even now I am amazed at what it can do. I keep hoping he will reincarnate himself as someone else in the future and we will see the program come back. I know I am dreaming, it just that it is so good.

I have GOT to fire mine back up and check it out as well... I am STILL learning what all Decrypter can do!!!

BTW, who is LUK working for/with these days? FAR too much talent to be idle...

Many of those features have been there for a while. But anyone with a decrypter knew Big Brother was going to be breathing down their neck, the MCA sort of insured that, along with some bad court interpretations on fair use. Too bad he wasn't clairvoyant. A new encryption system could cause problems without updates. But as we've noted, there's more there than a decryptter.

Island Thunder is safe for now on Antigua. I don't think France cares very much, that's where VSO hangs their hat. But then, they aren't as big a player as DVD Decrypter in getting backups of DVD movies done. There's been a proliferation of DVD recording apps, but the ranks of good decryption software is small and just lost a major player, even if it was freeware. For now only the support is dead, DVDD is still the king of rippers. DVD Decrypter will be with us for some time as it will take a while for a decent replacement to come along; but for those wanting only a good decrypter, when newer encryptions come along, that will end a lot of the usefulness for those.
