Or do I need a HDMI input ? I have a HDTV that only supports component cables.

    Will it still Up-scale ?

I believe upscalling dvd players or recorders can output the upscalled video via componet or HDMI. The same goes for progressive scan.

You should bear in mind though that flat panel displays have a high resolution (often HD compliant) which means any standard definition video has to be upscalled to the displays native resoltion anyway and done by the display electronics.
I wonder if external upscalling by a DVD player actually makes much difference if any. Food for thought!!!!!

I have a toshiba d-vr5 and the manual is not clear but seems to imply that upscalling will only work with HDMI, not component.
