    Hi,

I have a Samsung laptop NP700Z5a and Windows 10 and I cannot run any DVD's or CD's on my laptop anymore. The DVD RW drive is there but cannot communicate with the discs apparently.

I have resetted the default settings, uninstalled the drive (Standard SATA ACHI Controller) and run the Windows problem fix - no change whatsoever. When I checked the list volume in command prompt for drive E: a file list showed up and this text:

    C:\WINDOWS\system32>E:
The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error.

    C:\WINDOWS\system32>dir
Volume in drive C has no label.

    What should I do know?

I had Windows 7 and then upgraded. The last time I reinstalled Windows 10 DVD drive worked (at least I could install Microsoft Office with a CD). I remember that a month ago I couldn't watch a DVD but I thought it was just that one. I'm not totally sure when this problem has started but after reinstalling Windows 10 the 3rd time.

so the 2nd & 3rd times you installed win 10 where fresh installs not upgrades? is the win 10 version from last year or the latest from the july anniversary version of this year? you do know that win 10 does not support playing movies off cd\dvd unless using a 3rd party program like vlc don't you?

Fresh installing. Some days ago there was a big upgrade. I didn't notice any big upgrade in July.

Neither VLC Player cannot open a DVD or CD:

    "Your input can't be opened:

VLC is unable to open the MRL 'dvdsimple:///E:/'. Check the log for details."

try a system restore to before this problem started which I presume was caused by that big update.

I can answer this actually the windows 10 anniversary update gets rid of a lot of older hardware this includes older web cams produced by logitech as well as older drive controller chipsets this is why you are getting a i/o error you need to turn off the power saving features on your hard drive and computer while plugged in the power saving feature is preventing the drive from reading or getting enough power
