I have a HP Pavilion which is a couple of years old. It has been a great PC but windows drives me wild.
Why is everything such a hassle when Microsoft is present?

My current problem is that i am downloading movies from the net and continue to get the error message:

Windows media file can not play this file. the player might not support the file type or might not support the codec that was used to compress the file.

I have tried to find the codecs that I need but have no idea how to find out or where to get them.

i speak to my mates who have MAC and they say I never get these problems.

    MICROSOFT is the pits...

Has anyone got the answers I need?
    PLEASE...

    www.google.com

    search for VLC

It's a video player and it plays all format files. VLC doesn't need a codec for it to read the videos.

I use it all the time, I'm just annoyed by the VLC Icon . That orange cone.

I use VLC because I got sick of finding which codec works with media player.

Use a codec pack like Combined Community Codec Pack.

some files that I download from the net are saying missing codec. This problem only started about a month ago. I have not installed any new program in that time.
