i boot up windows and it only ever gets so far as the blue screen with the windows logo and saying windowss is starting up, and it wont budge past there. It's been happening for a day now, and my efforts havnt prevailed. I've trid reseating my ram, checking the connections for the harddrive, run a system restor but it would only let me restore it to the 27th of April, the day it started playing up. I did a OS repair and it let me get on to the computer where i could do everything perfectly, but it wouldnt work again at restart.
I'm all out of ideas, except for a Full Format, which i dont want to do, and im not sure it would work either, as my fears are a hard drive failure.

Any body else got some tips?

i would use a linux live cd and boot on that computer. than back up important data. then you will probably have to format and reinstall.
here is a link to download a live cd to back up your data

When I had a similar problem on window xp pro sp2, where
the computer would hang at the windows log in screen,
I searched the internet and found "Paragon justboot corrector"
With the demo you can get a look of your nonbooting hard drive
and maybe see what the problem is. My problem was my c: drive
was showing up as e: in the registry causing it not to boot. After
changing the drive letter back to c:, the computer started
    right up.
