I just visited Windows updates. They said that I couldn't update cuz my windows xp isn't activated. I've had my pc 4 over two years and now microsoft is saying that my windows might not be geniune and isn't activated. It came with my pc. Has anyone else had this problem?

I asked a few days ago about windows update not workly properly. I did what u guys suggested and now I can get passed the geniune thing and on to updates. But the updates still fail to install. The ones that have been able to download and install keep coming back. My windows security center is shut down and I can't find a way to turn back on, I am completely without any type of antivirus right now cuz after installing avg 7 and not getting it to run properly I uninstalled and tried to reinstall norton and now that won't work properly. Guess I'm not really asking a ?, just wanted to vent. Thanx for your help.

Microsoft has gotten a little out of control recently. Windows update no longer works for me (winME or Win2k). They think my IE is lower than 5. Also, when I try to get office updates, they say my PC is a mac.

As far as security center goes, you are better off having that disabled. All it does is check to see if you have auto update on and an AV installed. It doesn't stop it from using 10 to 30 MB of RAM though.

The way it works, is that it only shows up when you have something missing or not activated. You can try turning off automatic updates and see if it pops up.

If that doesn't work read on...

I am not looking at my WinXP, so this is coming from memory. If you want bring it back, right click "My Computer". Then go to "Manage". Expand Services and Applications and double click Services.

On the right side scroll down to Security Center. Right click it and select properties. Check its service status. It will either say started or stopped. Click start if not started. Then make sure startup type is set to automatic.

You can disable it by setting startup type to disabled or manual and then clicking stop.

Also, you should be able to access security center from Control Panel. Just double click the sheild icon. However, it will only show up when it has to notify you of some "security vulnerability".

This post is going to be directed towards you anti-virus installation.

When installing and uninstalling AV software (especially Norton), they leave traces of their previous installation. Sometimes (again especially with Norton), they leave enough to not allow you to upgrade or install a new AV.

For uninstalling Norton go to this address:

    http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/nav.nsf/docid/2001092114452606

Read it carefully as this is only for Norton 2003 and under. There is a link on the page for NAV2004/2005

You should also check if there is a similar app for AVG. I am not familiar with that one, but I remember how hard it was to get rid of NAV2003 & NAV2004. The manual uninstall does not remove it completely, but enough to install something else.

I now use Symantec Corporate which was made much better than the Norton series.
