I want to setup a wireless g network for my laptop and am going to keep the router next to my pc. Do I have to get a wireless adapter for my pc or can I just connect it throught the ethernet card?

Try to get one that is 802.11 b/g if you can swing it..

Here is the one I have if you are interested
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16833127028

It works great and is easy to setup :) There are some a step above this now that are a little faster 125Mbps, but that one is plenty fast I almost can't tell the difference in the laptop and my PC (plugged in) as far as speed on the net goes. To get the full advantage of the 802.11 b/g though you need the same WiFi card for your laptop, but if not is no big deal any WiFi "G" card will work..

    Cheers

Your computer that you plug into the router will be just as fast if not faster than it ever was. Is that what you were wondering?

no, i mean the transfer speeds along the network. will it transfer at wireless g speeds without the pci card just being hooked up to the router?

It will only go as fast as the router and WiFI card will allow.. What is the model number of your router?

Speeds range from 11 Mbps to 125 mbps

Most PCI LAN cards are 100 Mbps

So if you got a decent router you will not notice any difference.

    Yes
You will have 4 ports you can plug into :)
its speed is 54Mbps so no need to buy the more expensive WiFi card if you haven't bought one yet just get the 54 Mbps card or USB wireless adapter.

I have the 54Mbps card in both my laptops and they fly over the net :)

Can you guys recommend any settings on my router to block off outside access and to improve security settings?

Your router will be equiped with 64 and 128 bit encryption WEP. So all you need to do is activate one of the two usually 64 Bit is plenty and most cards will only support 64 Bit anyway. Once you activate the encryption you will have to manually install some keys that are about 13 charecters long, and most will let you install up to 8 of those so it would be very hard for someone to be able to break those codes and most people won't even bother if they can't get on your network. Just make sure you write down the keys and activate them same keys on every PC you want to use your nework.. It's really a lot easier than it sounds. Maybe your router manual will have these instructions also, but most dont. Go figure? You will see exactly what I am talking about though once you have your router hooked up and look at it threw your browser..

    :)

I convinced my dad to let me setup the wireless network. I plugged the ethernet cable from the pc into lan 4. I plugged the ethernet cable from the dsl into the Internet slot. When I try to log on nothing happens, I can't get past the dialing number screen. The laptop won't load any pages on the browser.
