    @Ripper

I got the external 16X lightscribe DL LG 2166D last Xmas and have had no complaint's with it. It will out rip my benqs for scratched discs. I just got the Benqs 3 months after the LG and to date I burn almost all discs on the benqs. Occassionally I use the LG as a burner and sometimes do a triple burn with 2 BQs and LG. That's a sight to see and Nero struggles but it works.

Yeah I like my LG and I liked my now retired TDK4X which was an LG but I didn't know until I came here to AD. I think there a lot of good burners out there.

So i see that certain LG drives are good for ripping, what other drives are good for ripping and reading scratched CDs?

If you want a good ripping drive, try to get your hands on an old I/O Magic Generic 8xDVDRW a.k.a. Optorite DD0405. Mine will read gouged, even cracked discs.

Cool. I have an old (well it is now) LG GSA 4120b, which is only 12x, but that is OK, as I burn @ 12x max anyway :)

@Dunker: That's one beastly drive, LOL. Cracked disks ^.~

    :)

I installed a BenQ1650 that goes to waste in my wife's computer, she only shops and chats w/friends so its never been used except reading CD's. I consider it my "Ace in the hole" as I might get rid of her machine but I'll swap out her drive B4 I do
I'm relieved to hear its not only me that found these drives to have problems ripping a disc with minor flaws on them. I too look forward to seeing other brands that do better. How about just a pure DVD ripper? Anyone keep one for ripping only?

If everybody's so concerned about only ripping, you might as well just get a dvd-rom drive. They will almost always outperform a dvdrw drive for ripping. Light-on dvd-rom's used to be the top dog for ripping but I don't know if that holds true anymore.

    edit for spelling

my trusty LG 4480B dvd-rom/cdwriter combo drive is something like 3yrs old and is still ripping thru films like it was brand new, it's done many 1000's of movies so far and never lets me down, whatever movie is fed to it, bless it..

MORT81---Thanks, I was asking that question in a backwards, non-technical manner. I have been thinking of adding a DVD-ROM I've had sitting around as payment from when a friend wanted a new DL burner in its place.

i had my goold ole Toshiba SD-M1712 drive that worked good for years, but sadly i think its gonna die soon cuz as of the last 4 months or so its been reading discs when it feels like it, i might look into those optorite drives and see if they are that good. LoL reading cracked CD's is pretty darn good in my opinion.

xeonox- With all due respect- to yourself & Dunker who posted about The Optorite drives Ability to Read scratched ,Gouged & even Cracked Disc ! I would not fault either of you on the drive choice ,not being that familiar with Optorite ! Or Even reading /ripping scratched disc with the optorite drive . As much as we all try to care for our precious data,Game , or Movie disc=DVD's Life 's little trauma's can sometimes happen to them and they may get scratched ect... Hovever putting a Cracked Disc in your drive to play/read/rip is akin to puuting a bullet in the cylinder of a revolver and playing that Russian game ! You may get away with the 1st time ,even the 2cnd but the odds are not in your favor ! Optical media & DVD media are wonderful pieces of technology but even they have limits ! and Putting a cracked disc in your drive will push those limits to the breaking Point ( Disc Shatter ) literaly! And when your cracked disc commits sideways ( suicide!!!!) it will likely take your drive out as well !!!!!!!!!!! and nobody wants that!!! So yes on the scratched & perhaps the Gouged as well but NIx on the cracked disc .. Your drives will thank you !!! Good Luck happy burning & Merry Christmas to you both & everyone else too ! Ciao!

LoL, i didnt put a cracked disc in my drive, i just read that someone else did and was just relaying the message, it would have to be a very very very important data disc for me to stick a cracked CD/DVD in my drive knowing the speeds that they can spin at. i was just impressed how the guy said they read scratched discs.

I just use the Optorite for salvage operations. True, a cracked disc could shatter I suppose, if it's really bad, but I see a fair number of discs with small cracks near the spindle or outer edges. The Optorite can often handle those. I try to avoid reading cracked discs whenever possible, to be sure, and I am aware that I could toast my beloved Optorite if I do. It's sort of a last-resort thing, if there's no other way, to disc contents. But I immediately make a fresh disc - no way I'd reuse a cracked disc!

MY LG is rather good at reading scratched discs. It runs laps around both my 1650 benqs. It'll read those that the 1650s freeze on, with no problems!

Well- They are your disc & your drive ! and if it shatters !well no more reading scratched disc & no more Optorite drive ! Unless you have a spare ! That's all I was trying to say ! I cannot lie I put a cracked disc in my Benq once (Tired did'nt notice it) and luckily nothing damaging happened ! to the drive That time! When I noticed thedvd was cracked near the center/spindle hole - I finished the Job !! I had a duplicate of that movie no cracks ,gouges or scratches . I can see you point on scratches & gouges ! I would just hate for anyone to lose a good burner with a cracked disc - That is something that could be avoided ! I was'nt trying to offend or attack anyone - just offer advice - If that's how it came across - My humble apologies to all ! Well Merry Christmas all ! Peace!!

You also need to watch those "by mail discs," Blockbuster sent me a disc that was cracked from the hub thru to the outer edge. Quality control!

Luckily it never made it into my burner. I just sent it back. It took a lot to break that sucker fully in half way thru.

They always seem to break near the chip that Blockbuster embeds to check and see if illegal backups are being made. (HAHA,jk, any regulars remember those threads?)
