Please look for a log of your failed burn, found here:

    Program Files\Ahead\Nero\NeroHistory

Post it in this thread and we should be able to help you.

Something to consider for your situation in general is that your mum's dvd player will have to be able to play .avi files from disc - not all are capable of doing so.

Assuming that the standalone will play DivX files, consider using ImgBurn to burn them to the disk.
Run ImgBurn and from the splash screen, click 'Write files/folders to disc'
Browse to and load the files.
Insert a disk, select a moderate burning speed (under the 'Device' tab) and click the green button.

Personally I use InfraRecorder to burn data now, but yes giving either of these a try would be worthwhile.

I've never been a huge fan of Nero past version 6.6.0.18!

Try your project with ImgBurn - it also produces a log after a burn session - I hope you won't need it..

If you look at the disk using Windows explorer does it list four movies.

If you can play all of the movies on the PC from the burned disk, it's not a burning problem.

Occasionally my DVD player will not play certain .avi files - it's a codec problem, but without knowing specifics it'll be a nightmare to troubleshoot exactly. But as attar said, it isn't a burning problem.

ive had problem with my dvd player playing xvid.could be that 1 particular file that isn't showing up could be an xvid or some other type of file that won't play.I got a program called gspot that can identify what type of file it is.also fourcc changer to change the file type

@attar maybe you could post a link for him.pretty sure if was you that referred me to them programs and they are very helpful.

edit just noticed don't need to post a link.its on afterdawn software(automatic link)
