Since you do not know for sure how the xbox was modded you first need to find out if it was softmodded or chipped. Did your friend explain to you how the box was modded, if a MS Backup or C backup and EEPROM was created before the xbox was modded?

If your friend does not remember if a MS Dash or C backup was created, you'll need to download a clean 5960 Dash from a torrent. FTP the xbox check E:/backup. Look if it contains a MS Dash backup and eeprom. Copy the entire contents of C and E onto your pc. Once all the contents are on your pc do a system search for the eeprom.bin within C and E. If you do not have the eeprom run the original exploit game disc or if you dont have the game, use a AID disk and from the mod click "Create EEPROM Backup".

After you have obtained the 5960 dash, if your going to install the Ms dash manually, you'll need to run an original exploit disc with its game saves. Boot the box with the eject button make sure the LED stays GREEN when the game running. After the exploit menu loads, ftp the box and overwrite entire contents while the mod menu is running. Reboot and you have just installed the stock ms dash, it would be much safer if let the exploit disc restore you MS Dash.

If you are going to use a disc to install it for you just unzip the contents and name the zipped folder as "MS" and ftp that folder to E:/backup. Then with the exploit disc you would then click "Restore MS Dash".

If I were you I would download an untouched MS dash from a torrent, do not take any chances and make sure get the eeprom.bin from the box before you attempt anything, backup your whole xbox drive.

Make sure this file "shadowc.img" is found within the C partition if its not there then it means that evox is running virtual C partition.

You will need to use a gamesave exploit softmod then you need to put your game in, make use the LED stays green when you run the exploit disc. Once at the install screen, ftp is enabled. Since Evox is not running your true contents will be displayed, evox hides your true files. Now ftp into xbox and look in C if there is a file called "shadowc.img" you know its the right one. Copy the entire contents of the C and E.

I'm not any modchip expert (softmodder for life!) but wouldn't the boot be different since your overriding the bios.

Yes, the boot will be different. The bios is only a set of instructions of how the box should function. When you softmod or hardmod the in-memory retail RSA public key is replaced with a bios that reveals the private key. Allowing any non-retail XBE to run unsigned code. A clean ms dash will have a retail bios, meaning that all its protections will be restored. With a modchip the bios is flashed in order to remove and break protections, just like when macrovision is removed from a dvd.
