Sometimes XP will recognize an external USB HD and other times it will not. Can someone tell me how to have XP identify an external drive?

    Thank you for your help.

do you get the usual "ding" sound when you plug it in or several "dings"?
I know its not the best way to explain it but several "dings" such as "ding, ding, ding" means the device has malfunctioned.

Can you post an audio recording of the sound?
