Gotta love windows. I have a HP laptop running XP pro. When you start it flashes the HP screen, then the XP loading screen, then goes to the blue welcome screen and stalls there. It won't go into the desktop, won't ask for login, just the welcome. The mouse stills moves but nothing else. Anyone ever experience this?

Seems like you have a software problem... Can you get into safe mode? You can get to the menu to enter safe mode on boot up... Just before your windows starts to load press F8, on that menu select "safe mode"... Does it go in now?

Nope...not even in safe mode. Still stops at the welcome screen.

so is there any sort of error message at all when you turned it on (i.e. before it gets to the welcome screen)?

I guess you can always reformat your hard drive when things don't look right. That's what I did whenever I encountered such issue and trying to repair takes forever and useless sometimes, then I end up reformatted my system so I don't have to deal with them headaches trying to solve the problem.

Good to hear that you've solved the problem the easy way around. You've made the right choice -- at least, that is what I'm doing too if repairing won't solve the issue.
