There were some rumours of an XviD certification programme with a Zoran Vadis 888 based player being the first to be certified. That was months ago though and nothing seems to have happened. So basically you don't buy an XviD player. You buy a DivX player or generic MPEG-4/avi player.
My Philips DVP-642 plays xvid. Better compatibility than divx, in fact. Probably the same is true for the 5140 and the 5960, which are improved versions, respectively.
The 642 can't handle qpel, 3 warp point GMC, N-VOP's high bitrates, most CQM's, non 1:1 PAR's, etc. ESS based players are about the least XviD (ASP MPEG-4 Part 2) compatible.
Yup, just start a DVD-ROM compilation and drop your files in. No need to do a DVD-Video compilation. @celtic_d My 642 (0530 firmware, I think - the one without Macrovision) seems to have fewer issues with xvid than with divx. I'm not sure why, though I am aware of the qpel problem. Don't the Philips 5140 and 5960 have Mediatek chipsets, and thus don't have so many problems?
Yeah, MTK based players can handle qpel, higher bitrates, have less problems with CQM's, can handle non 1:1 PAR's, N-VOP's, etc. Still no 3 warp point GMC though. Fact is that if you encode with a home threatre profile in either XviD* or DivX it should play fine on any certified player. *My build is patched to not insert N-VOP's for HT profiles. Other builds you may still get N-VOP's.

SMI, SRT, SUB, TXT are not DivX formats. Don't think that DXN invented English, Spanish, Portuguese, French, etc. either. The only DivX subs are xsubs and they are bitmap based so language doesn't come into it. So it is MPEG-4 certified? To handle what profile? Somehow I doubt it really does handle mp4 files. Also I don't even see it on DXN's certification list.

I'd recommend anything other than a dvp-642. Also I guess no other ESS based players or cheap SunPlus based ones. Spend a bit more and get something MTK or Zoran based. For instance if you want a Philips player go with the DVP-5965K (local model number may differ). Supports HDMI and is DivX Ultra certified.
The 642 is a solid and proven player. There ARE better players out there now, like the 5960 series which Celtic_Druid mentioned, or the 5140 if you don't need upconversion to HD. They are all within about $20 or so of each other online. But if availability is a problem, the 642 is pretty clost to ubiquitous.
I just read that the 5960 butchers filenames to 8.3 notation, meaning you get the tilde then number. If you don't mind that and want upconversion for your HDTV, get the 5960. If you don't need upconversion or don't hve an HDTV, get the 5140.
im really thinking of getting the 5960 because now its on sale i think for $60 whats the pros and cons does it play all reigon dvds or can i change it? and is the hdmi cable really required?
