I was following the Xvid to DVD guide
    http://www.afterdawn.com/guides/archive/convert_avi_to_dvd.cfm
... until I got to the encoding process with TMPGenc. I can't use it though because my free trial ran out. So now I have the movie and the extracted AC3 audio but can't encode. Is there another route I can go or should I try to put the audio back in? If so, how???

Well as far as free MPEG2 encoders, you could use HCEnc, QuEnc, NuEnc, etc. instead of TMPGEnc.
