What is a bonfire night? ....aside from the arson? Does it celebrate something?

Guy Fawkes night, gerry. Where we all get skittled, make fires, and set off fireworks ;)

You are missing the point. Bonfire night has been going on for hundreds of years.
V for vendetta if a film made out of the conspiracy that took place on bonfire night.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guy_Fawkes_Night

Also called Guy Fawkes Night BTW as he was the conspirator.
