i find winavi is prob the best and fastest, converts almost anything however i have had a few file that didnt work with winavi so i used vso divxtodvd which solved most of the problems.I'm still having a few problems when converting especially using winavi, it converts all the way to the end and then the system seems to hang on 99%, any ideas anyone?

Well guys & gals..I like Mainconcept Mpeg Encoder, the best.Due to the fact u can take those tiny videos that only show up 12"x12" on your TV & stretch them to fit the whole screen..I've got a 60" TV & when I first started converting 2 DVD I was getting a finished Video that was only useing 20" of the screen..now w/Mainconcept..I use the full screen 60"
Of course there is a little trade off with the larger video..Depending on the quality of your AVI..But none I've found that were not viewable.
But the whole process take 2 1/2 to 3 hrs, just to get an Mpeg video..then I use TMPD DVD16 to convert to DVD.
Now if I'm in a hurry I use VSO DivxToDVD..this is usually real time or a little faster
Point of interset..I converted 7seconds [AVItoVOB}the sound was garbled, sounded like static..the picture was excellent..well a little curiosity..I found it was'nt quite totaly encoded as an AVI that would play on the TV,but it would play on my computer
So now I follow this approach
    NanDub !!!
the audio was probably not made carefully enough...
The quick & easy fix is to re-interleave your AVI, using: probably NanDub would be best
    http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/ndub/nandub-binary-1.0rc2.rar
You need to set both audio and video to 'DIRECT STREAM COPY'.
Then use Save as AVI [F7]..under FILE to save your new AVI..on a diff drive or diff file on same drive
BELOW IS A METHOD FOR OUT OF SYNC AUDIO & VIDEO
You cannot slow the audio down, instead you must increase the video framerate.
For example, if it is standard 23.976 you could change it to 23.984
There will be a recommended framerate listed, which will allow the audio and the video to finish
at the same time (which is what you want :)
But trial & error is the only sure way...
Ideally you will read the AVI from one drive, and write the new file to another.
If you have only one HD, try to read from one partition and write to another.
If you have only one partition, make sure you don't overwrite any files - make a different (destination)
    folder.
By manipulating video framerate and advancing or retarding the start of the audio, there is no
messed-up AVI that cannot be fixed, or at least made more watchable.

Hi, I'm kinda new to this stuff, and I encountered some problems, which I didn't see here metioned (or I didn't notice - sorry).
I had an mkv file with multiple audio streams, using mplayer's mencoder I succesfully converted it into avi (xvid)format and it plays just well with any videoplayer. But when I try to convert it to mp2 file with tmpeg encoder plus the follwing things happen and won't happen:

The duration of the file is 2x bigger than originaly, no problem I set up the start frame and end frame properly.. first I didn't notice, just after converting and burning it, that it has no sound. It doesnt recognise the audio stream from the begining. I read before that tmpeg encoder can't do anything with ac3 audio. So i fast checked with AVIcoded if it is ac3, but no:
    "Audio: 53 Mb, 204 Kbps, 48000 Hz, 2 stream, 0x55 = MPEG Layer-3, supported"
    "Videó: 298 Mb, 1133 Kbps, 23.976 fps, resolution: 640*480 (4:3), XVID = XVID Mpeg-4, supported"
"File: 352 Mb (352 Mb), duration: 0:36:49, type: AVI, 1 audiostream, quality: 68%"

It doesn't differ from any of the files I've converted untill now, but still it won't recognise the audio stream (althought it's mp3), and it plays well with any videoplayer without problem.
For mkv to avi used this command with mencoder:
    "E:\Windows\mplayer\mencoder.exe" "C:\Anime\1.mkv" -aid 1
    -oac mp3lame -ovc copy -o "c:\Resources\1.avi"

Now im trying to convert it with divx to dvd, maybe it succeeds. Does anyone has idea about this? I guess I'll have to use something to rip out the audiostream with something then use tmpg encoder.

Thank you for reading and all ideas are welcome.

Do you have any idea why the link to VFAPI is linked to the Japanese version? All the errors and buttons are in Japanese, and it's throwning some error on the d2v file...

    ???? D:\testing AVI WAV\audio.d2v ??????.

I'm assuming the ??? are characters in the Japanese language set I don't have installed...not that it would help as I don't read japanese.

If someone could throw up a link to the proper program it would be helpfull.

Yes, that's where I d/led it from...both servers give me the same zip, and when I run it it's not in english...here's a small excerpt from the readme.txt:
    [bold]
    =======================================
    VFAPI Reader Codec 1.05

Basically, that's what the buttons and the application looks like. I went to the site mentioned, and I got the same thing. Can anyone d/l it and see if it looks messed up too?

I'm new at this avi->dvd stuff. After reading all the post from this thread, i got the feeling that most people use tmpg but i read somewhere that it was free and also very easy to use vso divxtodvd so I decided to try that but only found the trial version of v.199.13 and not the freeware version.

I want to burn 25 episodes of a japanese anime each about 170 MB in size on to a dvd so I can play it on a home dvd player but I couldnt figure out what the maximum number of files I can put onto a dvd with vso divxtodvd so I decided to test it out with only four episodes and it took 3 hours!...is it suppose to take this long considering i have a brand new comp with intel centrino 1.8GHz with 752MB mem? I ran the files through avicodec and it's a 4:3 divx 3 video and mp3 audio file and decided I didnt have to separate the video and audio files as told from the convert avi to dvd guide on this site. Regardless, it worked and creating a chapter every 5 min but I got a problem some people have experienced with the edges being cutoff causing some of the subtitles to be cutoff. Can I fix this if I convert the file to widecsreen or is there something else I should do? Also, is there a way to get rid of the "trial version www.divxtodvd.com" that's marked on the output dvd file besides purchasing the software?

I couldnt fix this problem with vso divxtodvd so I decided to use tmpgenc and downloaded the tmpgenc 3.0 express trial version but the guide on this site refers to tmpgenc v2.54 something. Anyone know which one is better to use? I got a link the guide to tmpgenc 3.0 express from someone who posted it and it's an easy step by step guide. Thank you. but it also didnt tell me how many files I can fit onto a dvd so this time i decided to try 14 files each about 170MB and it's taking 22 hours to analyze and encode the whole thing!!! I'm only have way through it and it seems like it will output one large mpeg file after it's done. What do I do after this in order to convert the mpeg file into a dvd format so that I can play it on my home dvd player?

I realize I've been going on and on and should probably stop and take a breath but I'll compile a list of questions with additional related questions.

    1. How can I tell how many avi file I can put onto a dvd with vso divxtodvd?
    2. Is there a way I can get rid of the "trial version" marked in the output of vso divxtodvd?
    3. I notice you can cut off portions of the video with tmpgenc 3.0 express... is there a way i can do this with vso divxtodvd?
    4. how can I solve the cutoff edges problem with vso divxtodvd?...I was thinking of making it widescreen so I'd be able to read the subtitles.
    5. Using tmpgenc 3.0 express, how do I know which aspect ratio to choose?
    6. How can I tell what the maimum anount of files I can put onto a dvd with tmpgenc 3.0 express?... the default resolution set was at 352x### and I changed it to 720x480 but it didnt change the file size at all on the bottom so I kept it at the better resolution.
    7. There's a lot of filter option...what do they do?
    8. After analyzing and encoding 14 svi files with tmpgenc 3.0 express, it should output a large mpeg file... what do I do to convert it to a dvd so that I can play it on a home dvd player?
    9. Can you mark differnet chapters with tmpgenc 3.0 express like the way vso divxtodvd does automatically?
    10. Is there a way I can add a menu feature or scene selection feature for easier navigation?

I think this is all.... I'm gonna stop and take a breath now *sigh*

Thanks for any or all the help in advance =]

    1. How can I tell how many AVI file I can put onto a dvd with vso DivXtoDVD?

    No.

    2. Is there a way I can get rid of the "trial version" marked in the output of vso DivXtoDVD?

    Buy it.

    3. I notice you can cut off portions of the video with TMPGEnc 3.0 express... is there a way i can do this with vso DivXtoDVD?

    No.

    4. how can I solve the cutoff edges problem with vso DivXtoDVD?...I was thinking of making it widescreen so I'd be able to read the subtitles.

Try 16:9 if that's an option.

    5. Using TMPGEnc 3.0 express, how do I know which aspect ratio to choose?

4:3 if you have a 4:3 TV. 16:9 if you actually own a widescreen TV.

    6. How can I tell what the maimum anount of files I can put onto a dvd with TMPGEnc 3.0 express?... the default resolution set was at 352x### and I changed it to 720x480 but it didnt change the file size at all on the bottom so I kept it at the better resolution.

Resolution has (almost) nothing to do with filesize. Reduce the bitrate (and lose quality) to reduce filesize. Try a bitrate calculator.

    7. There's a lot of filter option...what do they do?

Try them and see. You can always undo it.

    8. After analyzing and encoding 14 svi files with TMPGEnc 3.0 express, it should output a large mpeg file... what do I do to convert it to a dvd so that I can play it on a home dvd player?

    This is Authoring.

    9. Can you mark differnet chapters with TMPGEnc 3.0 express like the way vso DivXtoDVD does automatically?

This is also part of authoring.

    10. Is there a way I can add a menu feature or scene selection feature for easier navigation?

    See above about authoring.

Thanks rebootjim for the response. Regarding questions 8-10 on authoring, what software would you or anyone suggest on using? I'm attempting to use TMPGenc 3.0 Express and after 22 hours of analyzing and encoding I get a .mpg file. What authoring software should I use now? Plus, if there is a set of instructions on how to the software it'd be very helpful. Thanks in advance.

I use nothing but DVDLab Pro.
Other good packages include Sonic Scenearist, and TmpgencDVD Author.

I use the older free version of VSODivx to DVD for 99% of my avi to dvd conversions and it works like a charm. I've read about playback blockiness and other problems, let me pass on a little hint-get a dvd player with a good video dac, I've done this and have no problems with playback artifacts at all. I have a Sony DVD-NS50P, works like a charm. Most of my conversions are close to dvd quality (of course the conversion is only as good as the source).

Hello zrdb..U are right about that, most programs do an excellent job..But I've got a nice 60" Sony TV & some files U download are cropped so much that on a TV of this size your viewing ares is about 20"x20"& smaller TV's even smaller[example being one of the Batman Begins was cropped so much that on a 21" TV it was 10x10]I stretched with no Quality loss. With MainConcept H.264 U can stretch these out to a very nice size & reset to 16.9,which makes for a very good picture with little or no quality loss..Of course as U say the quality U start with is basic with what U end up with..I have D/L crap & end up W/crap...But That old Cliche !! U get what U pay for..& what we get off the net is almost free.cause U still end up paying something..All with common sense know what I mean
