connect the cable to your laptop and starview.
now press on gtrom loader, press bin file.pick firmware v4.00,now press download.a bar will pop up.it will get to 100% and freeze for about 20 sec just wait.then another box will say download complete.and thats it you have flashed your starview

    Damn Damn Damn
The cable that came with the box is 9 pin with 2 female ends. One end connects to Starview but there is no compatible slot on laptop. Looks like I have the right cable although the label on the bag it came in says SL901. Anyone know if an adaptor can be got (Maplins matbe?)for this to connect it to USB port on laptop?

I tried to put the software on the my starview box last nite but i keep getting an error: 'Flash Upload fail'. I am sure i am doing everything right. I have the proper cable (9 pin f to f rs232) I open the bin file with the loader and select download. it attempts to download it but this error keeps popping up. Any ideas??

    cheers......

hi leche50. A usb-serial adaptor can be got from peats (Dublin) or maplin. I believe anywhere from €20 - €35, depending where you get it, and you will need to install a driver (for Windoze), should come with the lead I imagine.

hi block111, check the bin file, it should be 768.3KB ( 786,688B ).
It is possible it downloaded incorrectly, and there are a few dodgy files floating around.

Does the download start at all, if so, how far does it get before the failed message appears?

Check your COM ports, I think the gtrom loader defaults to COM1, but maybe your system is using COM2 or whatever.

I don't use Windoze as a rule, but here goes, for WinXp.

Right click on My Computer, select Properties. When the System Properties box appears, select the hardware tab, and click the Device Manager button.
When Device Manager window appears, go down to Ports (COM & LPT), click on the little + sign to open it up, and you will see a list of the actual COM ports in use.

You need to match the one in GTROM loader, to the one that's actually on your system. I think the loader can only use COM1,2,3 and 4, so if your pc/laptop is using something higher, you will need to setup a COM port on one of those numbers.

Sorry if you already know all this, just trying to narrow down the possibilities.

Another silly question. Is it definitely a null modem cable. If you are not sure, go to G***le, and search for virtual null modem. You should be able to download a trial version, this will, AFAIK, trick programs into thinking that your normal serial cable is a null modem cable.

Might be worth a shot, just in case.

Hi mozer. One thing you can try.
Get gtrom loader ready, the same as if you were flashing the firmware anyway. Turn off the SV, hit download on gtrom, and then turn on the SV, this may take a few goes, and if it works, it will re-flash the firmware.

Bought the USB Serial Cable in Peats (€19.95 btw) and connected up and loaded v4 without any bother.
Noticed that clock now sets automatically and that stations show in full screen without big spaces at the sides. Only problem is that I know have 2 versions of nearly all channels and Sky 1 is stll silent.
    Thanks for all the help

Delete all channels and do a factory reset, turn emu off and do an auto scan, turn emu back on should solve all your problems. You will have to set up your favs again small price to pay.

Cheers for that eamo32. Turns out i was using a serial cable instead of a cross over cable. Downloaded and all channels working perfect now

Does a factory reset not restore the Starview to its out of the box condition i.e. firmware 2.57 which came with it?
