DVD-R is much more compatible out-of-the-box. DVD+R is theoretically better IF it can be booktyped to DVD-ROM. Simply put, booktyping fools a DVD player into thinking it's playing a commercially-made disc, rather than a recorded one. Some players are finicky or don't play either, because recorded media has a lower reflectivity than commercially-pressed discs.
