Thank you so much for your help - after three weeks of trying a variety of highly technical strategies, such as pleading with my computer, making fun of it and in the end just yelling at it, I finally managed to burn a recompressed DVD in disk utility. I may make it past forty now after all. Thanks again.

I have two macs: an iBook from Dec 04 and a Dual 800 G4. The iBook's superdrive died in June and was replaced by MAC under the warranty.

Now MTR 2.6.6 is extremely fickle on the iBook. I have 2.6.6 on both machines. A DVD which will rip on the G4 sometimes won't rip on the iBook. I'd prefer to use my iBook because the burner is faster. I use DVD2one and toast titanium.

My question - what's up? Is it about the DVD zone setting on my drive? The one on my G4 is locked Zone 2. My ibook still has a few changes. But the G4 rips Zone 1 and Zone 2. Now the ibook won't rip certain discs. I haven't figured out any pattern for the refusals. I thought maybe its something secret, like some kind of copy protection built into the replacement superdrive they just installed??

Sometimes it will rip files that, when its done, are all empty. Or seem to fill, but won't even play on VLC.

    A mystery.

    Hello Folks,

Hope someone can help as I'm confused. I have a powerbook with superdrive. I have the .ifo, .vob, and the .bpu files all collected in one folder. Size of all is below 3.25GB. How do I now burn a DVD that can be watched on a regular DVD player. I have iDVD HD as well as iMovie software on the Powerbook? Appreciate any help. Thanks.

    Hi Mediaguru,

Thanks for the reply. You are right- there is little hope for me.

Toast 6. Is there any way around having to buy Toast 6 to put the movie on a DVD format? No ssing the software I already have on Powerbook?

    Thanks.

I do believe you can. Look for disk utility...

But, I bet you can get a copy of toast 6 on ebay (legit) for very cheap.

Hi there, lots of good info here. My situation is a bit different. I am trying to create a backup copy on a VHS tape. I am trying to assemble the files onto iMovie to create the movie, then once the movie is created, make the backup copy to VHS. I do have the VCR hooked up to the computer. I want to know - is it possible to assemble VOB, IFO and BUP files onto iMovie, and if so, how... or do I need to use another program (such as the mac ripper). I would prefer to use iMovie. Right now, i am getting an error that says the files can't be imported, could not parse it, #2048. Second question, can one use Toast to do the data to VHS copy, or is using iDVD possible? I am assuming that it is not since it's usually used to copy DVDs and I know Toast does it too, but i'm just wondering if it's possible. My VHS interface is hooked up already properly. If I make a backup, I am used to doing VHS to DVD, but have never tried it reversed, so a bit perplexed about how to go about doing this. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

imovie deals with quicktime files. You can't use imovie to try to assemble or play vobs or ifos or anything like that. You'd have to convert your dvd to quicktime first with something like dvdxdv.

You can't really play with toast and copy that to vhs. Why vhs anyway? Dump that 30 year old format!

Why don't you just make a dvd and then copy from the dvd to the vhs?

Just to let you know that I have finally figured out the rip/burn/compress lark and thought I'd share how I do it:

Rip movie to hard drive using MTR 2.6.6. I usually don't change any setting, just hit go!
Compress movie with DVDRemaster 2.5.0. Again, I don't change anything (I don't have the pro version, just the normal version). Just incase you're wondering, settings are: M2VRequantizer, Normal quality, full remaster (as I don't exclude anything in MTR) and target size as 4450Mb.
Burn using Toast 7. Still using the Data tab and DVD-ROM (UDF) Format, although with Toast 7 you can just select the video tab and choose the "burn from video_ts" option - if the size is greater than 4450, then toast 7 will compress for you - so theoretically you can just use MTR and Toast 7........

This forum is rules! My story goes like this: I've got Mac the Ripper (kicks arse) and because of *THE MASTER* GURU (kicks arse too) I have sucessfully ripped some flicks and been able to watch the video_TS files fine on my computer. But to date I have only made fine coasters when trying to copy with Toast 6.0 Titanium and Roxio Popcorn 1.0.3. I've got a G5 with OSX 10.3.9 which came with a Pioneer DVD-RW DVR-106D. I tried different speeds but I've only used FujiFilm DVD+R so far. And I've carefully followed master GURU's instructions to the T. Everything goes fine but when Roxio gets near the end of copying I get this:

    The drive reported an error:
    Sense key= MEDIUM ERROR
    Sense code=0x57
    UNABLE TO RECOVER TABLE-OF-CONTENTS

I Then hit ok and I get:

    The drive reported an error:
    Sense key= HARDWARE ERROR
    Sense code= 0x44,0xD6
    INTERNAL TARGET FAILURE

I Then hit ok and get:

LEAD IN OR LEAD OUT FAILED TO BE WRITTEN

    Any suggestions????

I don't think it's the drive. I'm gonna bet you're using media your drive doesn't "like"

Try different brands... I use Ritek or Taiyo Yuden.

So I got some updated news I tried using DVD-R but the same brand as my DVD+R, their both FujiFilm. Now I get a successful burn from popcorn but then the image never shows up and when I put the disk back in the drive you can hear it spin up and then it justs ejects the DVD back out. Tommorrow I will try your suggestion of suing a different brand.

I have burned about 200 FujiFilm DVD-R discs uneventfully. I doubt it's the media you have chosen. I have used a Matshita, an Emprex, and a Pioneer burner to do this.

Never have I succeeded in using a Mac to burn a DVD+R.

Are you on the early (i.e., steep) part of the learning curve for burning DVD-R? Most people have quite a few burn failures when they start to make backup DVDs, but later can do it with about 99% success. The reasons why are not clear to me, as the process appears so straightforward on the face of it.

I'm using MacTheRipper, DVD2oneX, and Toast following the same steps as mentioned at the beginning of this 'DVD ripping with Mac' and am getting this error message:

    The drive reported an error:
    Sense Key = Illegal Request
    Sense Code = 0x30, 0x05
CANNOT WRITE MEDIUM - INCOMPATIBLE FORMAT

Any clue what this means and what changes I need to make to get rid of this error?
