you may wanna wait til sunday for the media.. if you check out this thread.. there are threads about media sales:

    http://forums.afterdawn.com/forum_view.cfm/47

i only use to hang out here in the mac side.. but that one has gotten me some good discounts on quality media..

and yes.. dont mess with the tdk stuff. you can test the stuff using dvd media inspector to tell you who the mana. on your tdk is. most of their stuff is made by them directly.. but not all that good.

I'm sure you've been asked this before but PLEASE help me..I have mac the ripper and I want to just check to see if everything copied correctly before I bother downloading the other programs I need. I have three dvd's that I've copied and now I have three folders but don't see to have a way of actually watching them...do I have to compress first??

    ok..

each movie is in there.. each folder should contain a "VIDEO_TS" and "AUDIO_TS".

you dont need to compress them if you're just going to watch it. you only need to do that if you want to burn them. but then again, if you have a dual layer burner and dual layer media.. it does not requre compression.

to watch the folders that you have:

    1. open dvd player
    2. hit apple+o
    3. select the VIDEO_TS folder.
    4. hit play.

    thats it....

just post if you have anymore questions.

i've got the same general set up you do.. (as you can see in my sig)

what brand of dvd are you using?
make sure the firmware on your burner is updated.

Thanks Lox...I believe I downloaded the necessary firmware and now I have to go through it all again. It is compressing and extracting right now. Must I use dual layer DVDs in this burner? That is something I'm not doing.

I use popcorn to burn the DVDs...didn't realize you could just download free software! It's working fine now except the LaCie burner won't work with just a DVD-RW. It will only record on these other DVD's I have that are lightscribe and extrememly expensive. I don't know if it has something to do with it being dual layer or lightscribe or not.

first off. you have one great drive.. if its the d2.. i have the same one.

now.. as far as media goes.. you are not constrained to using on lightscribe discs. you can use regular blanks. trust me.. much cheaper.
there is no free software for compression on mac. you use mac the ripper to rip the dvd.. you need porcorn or toast 7 or just dvd2onex to compress.

when you buy your blank media tho.. buy quality stuff. sony and fujis.. make sure they are made in japan. verbatim dvds.
if you have anymore questions pm me or just reply in the thread.

I'm trying to rip a ps2 game in order to install a custom patch. I know these rippers work with dvd movies, but will they work with ps2 games-dvd/cd/dvd rom? If not, then any suggestions?
    Any help would be great.

    Thanks

Wow...this guide is amazing. Thanks to everyone involved....specifically MediaGuru.

The only problem that i am having is this: the aspect ratio. When i play it on my computer, it looks fine and normal. It's in widescreen.

When i play it a dvd player downstairs, it's a compressed full screen. Basically, the widescreen is pushed in from the sides to make the picture look funny. It's not a MAJOR problem...but one that i would like to fix if it isn't hard.

I used MTR, DVD2ONEX, and Dvd imager to burn it on Disc Utility.

    Any thoughts?

    Thanks a bunch!

First of all, thanks to all who contributed to this! I'm up and running, copying my DVD's for the first time today and everything's actually working perfectly.

My only question is this: why not use Popcorn and combine the last two steps (compressing & burning) since it's only $10 more than DVD2One?? I apologize if this question was already covered - I didn't read pages 3-6 of this thread.

My media? Are you referring to the type of DVD-R's that i buy? If so, im using blank Memorex DVDs.
Sorry, definitely a new guy when it comes to all this.

I will check out the dvd player settings as well.

    Thanks a bunch Thelox.

dvd2onex gives you better quality when compressing. the new dvd2onex now also burns.

yes.. the brand. stay away from memosux. they cause playback issues. your better bet is to stick to taiyo yuden or verbatim. much better playback. sometimes when errors occur when burning, bad media can be your culprit.

yes. on that one i know there's been issue with no sound once it is burned tho. i know there is a codec / plug-in so it will fix that. i will need to research that one. but try it anyways and see what it will come out to.

    ok.. i think that's it.
but as stated before. do NOT use cheap media. especially since you can find much better media when on sale at either the same price or even cheaper.
there is a forum here on aD for just media. yes.. they mainly use PCs. Yes the software wont be the same. but media is media.. media is universal.. and every sunday or sooner they do have the media sales. to where you can find better media at memosux prices.. if not better

there you go. and happy burning

    Hi all,

I'm new to this forum and relatively new to mac using. I've tried the original tips from mediaguru with some of my dvd collection and run into problems using MTR

1- with some classic dvds ( usually less thn 4.4 GB) the rip process seems to work ok, the films are viewable using vlc but not other media players. and when burnt the discs are unplayable on my samsung950hd dvd player

2- with other films there is an error message at the end of the ripping process stating that there may be difficulty playing back...
why should this be? I have read that MTR is not 100% effective but so far I've had zero success. these films are unviewable even on vlc

could you guide me through where I've been going wrong?

    your help much appreciated

with the trial.. it only does the first 30 minutes.
how did you rip the dvd?
did you do full disc or main feature?

would recommend doing full disc then using dvd2onex to strip out the main feature
