your dvd may be a bad press from a bad batch. that's why it would be a good idea to check another dvd.. and see if that works. you may want to do the full disc in arccoss mode.. just trying to eliminate the obvious

    @ macfla

i realized i didnt reply to this one. popcorn is a one program that basically does the same thing that dvd2onex and toast 6 do. you can choose main movie or full disc with popcorn. i like the quality on the compression from dvd2onex. granted.. someetimes the movies are sometimes under the 4.7gbs so it wont need it. but most arent. only some of the older dvds.
and you get more options in dvd2onex. you can take out just one or two languages. you can take off subtitles.. on popcorn you cant.
now.. toast 7.. does toast 6 and popcorn in one.. among other things. again.. when compressing down big movies.. quality just isnt there..

hope you didnt unsubscribe from this thread and will read this. but i know it may help others.

Have patience with an old man, plz! :) I have a set of coasters (for 12)! Managed to rip, compress, and burn one DVD that works. I'm using the trial form of /dvd.2oneX2 after MTR. When the compression is finished, I've been receiving, not the Audio_TS and Video_TS folders, but what I think is a disc image -- namely, e.g., "Fantasia.img." When I click on that, I get the disc icon that I see in "Disc Utility" and not the audio/video_TS files. If I double click on the name (not the icon), I see the two folders; but it seems to me that it was those which I moved into Toast 7 and burnt a disc that plays in my computer but not on a separate component DVD player. Am I doing something wrong? Thanks for any help.

if you have toast 7 you can just drop the video ts folder into it.
    click on the video tab.
    click on "dvd-video from video_ts"
you can then drop the folder there.. or just click "select" then just find the folder that way..
    click on "Copy options"
then in the smaller window you can choose either whole movie or just the main movie
on the left side you will see a checkbox.. with the phrase "fit-to-dvd video compression"

you wont get the same quality as dvd2onex.. which actually sounds like you're making and image of course. when you are going to compress with that one.. make sure it says to files. cant remember the exact words.. once you hit to start. it will ask you what to name the folder and where to put it.

    hope that helps

i tried the arccoss mode on a different dvd... i have 4 seperate VIDEO_TS folders and dvd2onex2 wont recognize these folders saying that it is the wrong fileset... i want to buy the program after hearing all of the positive feedback but the trial mode has not shown any promise

Is there anyway to convert a VIDEO TS file that is just the Main Feature of a DVD I ripped using MTR into a MPEG 4 file?

Thanks, TheLox. I appreciate your information. I had read all the "directions" at the beginning of this thread and I thought I was following them accurately. But I expected that, after compressing, I'd see the Video & Audio folders in the designated place; however, what I found was the "disc image" (I suppose) and no icon, just the name, e.g., "Fantasia.img." Double clicking on that name, brought a rectangular-shaped, black icon. When I double clicked on that, I found the same icon on my desktop and a new screen with the Video & Audio_TS folders. Is that the usual way? It’s different from what I’ve been reading, I think; and, perhaps this was the reason why my burned discs wouldn’t play in my separate DVD player. Seems like an extra bit of trouble to get to those two TS folders. Thinking that this was not the way the DVD2oneX program was supposed to work, I assumed I was doing something wrong.

In summary: after the DVD2oneX program has finished compressing, should I not find in the place I had designated the two folders for audio and video?

Thanks for your help; I am very grateful. You’re helping an old dog learn new tricks!

yes.. once dvd2onex is done. you should have the two folders.. sometimes it will only give you a video_ts. you can drop that into toast 7.. it will to the rest.
toast 6.. you may want to add the audio_ts one.

dont worry.. it too me a while to figure all this out..

Yeah I tried Handbrake already and I didn't get any sound from the converted file. The Video TS file has sound when I play in DVD Player, but when I convert it to an MPEG 4 and play it in Quicktime or iTunes, there is no sound.

I used Handbrake to rip directly from the DVD and it didn't work, that's why I went to MTR to try another way, but I guess there is no alternative to get it to an MPEG 4.

    Nice guide : )

Can you recommend a straightforward way of creating menus for titles that were made in DVD2OneX in Movie Only mode. As well as starting the movie, I'd like to be able to add selection of different audio stream and subtitles to the menus.

    Hi,

After reading a large part of this thread, I hope my question hasn't been asked already. If so, please direct me to the right message. Please bear with my newbie questions.

I would like to back up a commercial DVD using a dual layer disk so that the picture is not compressed. I am using an external Pioneer A09 drive, Toast 7, MacTheRipper, and OSX 10.3.9 I have been able to back up my movies onto single layer DVD+R's with no problems before using Popcorn and Verbatim disks.

Can someone give me a few ideas for how to burn a movie onto a dual layer disk? How does the burning software (be it Toast 7 or anything else) know where the layer change should be set? If anyone has a Pioneer A09 or 109 drive, can you recommend a dual layer DVD+R brand that works well? I know I have a lot of questions...any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks a lot in advance!

In Toast 7, there are two options I can choose from.

    1. Under the Data Tab: DVD-ROM (UDF)
    2. Under the Video Tab: DVD-Video from VIDEO_TS

This 2nd option is how I back up commercial movies onto single layer DVDs. However, I was told that I should use the 1st option to burn my movie onto dual layer DVDs. I would really appreciate some direction from anyone who's used Toast 7 to burning DL DVD's before. The DL coasters get pretty expensive. Thanks everyone in advance!

    Thanks speters!

When you burn using the 2nd option, do you uncheck the "Fit-to-DVD video Compression" box on the left? If you do check it, do you change anything in the [bold]Copy Options[/bold] box? Thanks for answering my questions.
