    hi everyone,

I was used the instructions of this forum which were great! and i perfectly backed up a few of my dvds. Now when i try to burn in toast i keep getting and error message saying The drive reported an error: Sense Key= ILLEGAL REQUEST, Sense Code= 0x30, 0x05 CANNOT WRITE MEDIUM-INCOMPATIBLE FORMAT.

I was hoping somebody might have some ideas to fix this problem. Thanks

Probably a media issue. Try a different brand or speed.

has anyone tried ripping just trailers from dvds. do they have their own folder.

also, what is meant by "title set" "titles only" when given the choice to rip?

If you rip the DVD, why is it not possible to burn the copy just by dragging the files to a blank DVD in OSX?

Re: The error and media discussion.

My iMac only writes DVDs at 4X max. I've seen 8x rated media fail with an error and often it only writes 8x media at 2x while 4x rated media writes fine at 4x. I'm talking Memorex, Verbatum, FujiFiulm, etc. I haven't really tried any 'off' brands yet.

I did complain to Apple and they're coming here to replace my optical drive late this week to see if that solves the 8x media only writing at 2x.

The media aspect can be weird - a combination of brand and 'rated' write capability.

I have one of the LaCie external burners on order (the new one not shipping yet with lightscribe). Goodness knows how that will work out. I'm expecting a lot, but I'm not sure the dual layer will be of much use considering the cost of the media.

I am clueless as to how to rip dvds and burn them, I have never done it before. Yesterday I downloaded Mac the Ripper and am wondering how that works and can I burn a DVD using imovie on my mac once I learn to rip a dvd movie and how to keep it region one or region free. Thanks a bunch!

CJB65: That will not work because it will burn as a data disc and not a DVD video disc.

TAMEZBT: read the guide which is the first post on this thread.

I don't know how to conver pal to ntsc or vice versa.

The easiest way to convert from Pal to NTSC or vice-versa is to use DVD Converter which comes bundled with MPEG2Works 3.x.x.

MediaGuru did a great job in writing out this start guide on ripping. But in the steps somewhere I wish someone could tell me what I need and how to edit a movie.

Surely someone out there has done this and can assist me. I need just a little guidance.

    Thanks and God bless.

    Heya Mediaguru,

First off, beautiful job on the tutorial I have had no issues (or created any coasters) due to your great instruction.

I do have a questions for you or any others, who might know how to convert Bittorrent files to a standard DVD format, or even converting them to a .Avi or .Mov file.

    Thanks in advance,

    Samu_Rai

Hey - I'm not only new to ripping, but new to mac as well, so thanks in advance for you patience!

I'm a high school teacher and I use a lot of video clips in class. traditionally, I use a projector and DVD player to play DVD's I own and just skip around to the parts I need. Well, with a mac (and your advice) I'm hoping to rip or edit the sections I need out of the DVD as a whole and play them inside of a powerpoint or keynote presentation. I downloaded MTR and OSEX, but I'm having trouble getting the ripped files into iMovie so I can clip them into the chunks I need for class. Also, will I need to compress the files to get them to work better in a presentation format?

Thanks again for your patience and help!

Any standard video editing program like imovie uses dv or quicktime streams. You'll have to convert or rip to one of the formats your video editor uses.

Check out dvdxdv or cinematize for that.

Thanks Guru - that's working great and I'm getting the hang of iMovie...never could have done anything like this on my old PC!

Now I'm wondering if there is anyway to store the iMovie files on a CD to save space on my hardrive. I have an iBook with a combo drive - in other words I DON'T have a DVD burner...any suggestions? DVD2ONEX is only a DVD compressor right?

Since movie files are so freaking huge a CD would not be the best plan unless it is under 700MB. You could archive to DVD somehow or just do a real time dump of your video to a DV tape in your camera.

You can also relink your media clips so your project file is not that big but if you want to work with it again you'd have to transfer all the clips from your DV machine again. (if your original stuff is from DV).

Have you heard of a program called DivX? I have a PC using friend who swears by it for compressing DVD media to a CD. I downloaded the mac version and will try it soon - just wondering if you had any experience with it. It claims to compress all sorts of video files, including quicktime, iMovie, and FCP so that they will fit to a conventionaly CD and then play in a regular DVD player that supports the technology. My friend can get a 2 hour movie on 3 CD's

A two hour movie on 3 CD's? Sounds like a pain in the ass to me. I'd rather put a 2 hour movie on 1 dvd.

If you reduce the amount of data, something has to give. There will be loss somewhere!
